The Charge:
Cast your bread upon the waters
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you, O ye scattered sheep of the House of Israel! Hear ye this word from the Ancient of Days!
The Holy Word which stands before us today is found in the blessed Book of Ecclesiastes, penned by the wisest of men, King Solomon, whom the Most High endowed with great understanding. He calleth us to a peculiar and profound act:
Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.
The Casting and the Commanded Diligence:
O Israel, what is this "bread" which we are commanded to cast? It is not merely the sustenance for our bodies, but the very substance of our life, our labour, and our good deeds!
When the Lord led our fathers through the wilderness, He rained down the manna, the Bread of Heaven, commanding them to gather and to trust. But now, in this generation, we are commanded not just to gather, but to cast.
This is the principle of Divine Investment:
1. The Bread of Obedience: The first bread is our obedience to the Statutes and Judgments which the Lord gave unto our father Moses. Every act of keeping the covenant, though it seems small or lost in this heathen land, is a piece of bread cast upon the waters.
2. The Bread of Witness: Our upright walk and our separation from the ways of the heathen—this is our bread. We cast it forth as a living testament to the truth, even when the world mocketh and the currents pull against us.
3. The Bread of Mercy: Our acts of charity, our kindness towards our brethren, and our aid to the poor and desolate amongst our people—this is the sweet bread we must never withhold. Give freely, not for the praise of men, but for the glory of the Most High.
The Waters and the Waiting in Faith
And why upon the "waters"? The waters are vast, they are deep, and they are ever-moving! They represent the uncertainty of this life, the chaos of the nations, and the long, weary exile of our dispersion.
When a man casts his bread upon the turbulent sea, he sees it no more. It sinketh beneath the waves, and by the logic of the world, it is lost forever! But the Word of the Lord speaketh against the logic of man! It is a call to faith and patience!
You may labour, you may speak the truth, you may show mercy to a brother, and it may appear as though your effort has vanished without a trace—swallowed by the great sea of ingratitude or forgetfulness.
The Finding and the Faithfulness of God
But listen to the promise, the anchor of our hope: "for thou shalt find it after many days."
The Most High is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love!
• The bread of your obedience, which you cast forth in secret, shall return to you as Blessings and Deliverance in the sight of your enemies.
• The bread of your witness, which you cast forth into the chaos of the nations, shall return to you as Strength and the Gathering of our people.
• The bread of your mercy, which you cast forth to the needy brother, shall return to you as Righteousness and the Mercy of the Father upon your own soul.
Be not weary in well doing, O Israel! Though the days be many, and the finding seemeth far off, the seed which the righteous man soweth shall indeed bear fruit. Your King is Faithful, and your reward is sure!
