Civic Season unites our oldest federal holiday with our newest. July 4th commemorates the moment a new nation was born, based on ideals that each generation since has worked to bring to life: freedom, equality, justice and opportunity. Juneteenth, celebrated just a few weeks earlier, reminds us of the struggles and hard-won victories in our ongoing journey to form a “more perfect union.” Check out resources for Civic Season here: https://nieonline.com/tbtimes/summer_learning.cfm.

Does your school have what it takes to help protect the ocean for the future? Promote ocean and watershed conservation at your school or in your local community by becoming a NOAA Ocean Guardian School. An Ocean Guardian School makes a commitment to the protection and conservation of its local watersheds, the world's ocean, and special ocean areas, like national marine sanctuaries. The school makes this commitment by proposing and then implementing a school- or community-based conservation project. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025 - 2026 school year. All applications are due by July 1, 2025. Learn more at

There are still spots open for ANYTOWN®2025!If you know of a high school student who's ready to build their inclusive leadership skills, meet new people, and engage in meaningful dialogue, send them to ANYTOWN®! Tampa Bay had a few more spots available for both sessions (June 9-13 and July 14-18).

We empower inclusive leaders to change their communities by providing cultural education and facilitating difficult conversations. We believe that cross-cultural interaction and dialogue are the necessary tools we need to break down discrimination in all its forms.

The daily newspaper - a living textbook

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Tampa Bay Times is the largest daily newspaper in Florida. The Newspaper in Education (NIE) is a cooperative effort between school districts and the Times to encourage the use of newspapers as an educational resource – a living textbook. The newspaper provides teachers with contemporary informational texts that engage students and relate academic learning to real-world experiences. Research shows that students who learn using the newspaper as an educational resource score more highly on standardized tests and are more likely to become lifelong readers and engaged citizens.
