Teton Family Magazine

Teton Family Magazine Teton Family Magazine, cultivating community for those living on both sides of the Tetons, and for those who dream of making the move here. Eating fresh.

http://www.tetonfamilymagazine.com The mission of Teton Family Magazine is to provide unique, usable information for local residents that will make their lives better. Perhaps this means advice on how to plant fruit trees that thrive in the Teton environment, how to handle your 6-year old’s budding interest in the Internet, what to cook with all the spaghetti squash you bought at the farmer’s mark

et, where to turn for medical needs, or how to explore southern Wyoming’s Red Desert. What is sustainable and healthy? A vibrant local economy. Sitting around the dinner table with family and friends. Exploring with kids. Adventure. Getting to know your neighbors. Green building. Gardens. The founders of the magazine promise not to preach; and not one of them believes that sustainability means you have to sacrifice life’s pleasures.

"For tens of thousands of years, humans and dogs have grown and traveled, lived and died, together. It is clear to me, as my sweet girl now warms my feet and calms my mind, that I could not be who I am without her and the others who came before her. I, and indeed all of humanity, have had the good fortune of this partnership which is steadfast and true. And while my many adventures are all the more memorable due to the presence of my canine partners, the role of dogs truly shines in the quiet moments in between." -Virginia Powell Symons (Jackson Hole Local)⁣

In the past, the rugged Teton mountain area had little to offer in the way of year-round produce. According to Jana Stearns, who grew up behind the counter of Hungry Jack’s in Wilson, Wyoming, there weren’t many fresh food choices before the late 1960s. β€œThere were a couple of heads of lettuce, bananas, and maybe a tomato.” She remembers when the first avocados arrived (probably from California) β€œsometime in the mid ’70s.”⁣
⁣
Today, area farmers and modern shipping have changed all that, allowing fresh produce to line the stores each winter, and giving us a way to rebuild our health after a season of overindulgence.⁣

Let's start with this easy jar ferment to rebuild our guts. ⁣
