The parking lot at Hog Heaven Sporting Club was full of big pickup trucks, and a fleet of golf carts and mules surrounded the patio where lunch was being served. A crowd of people, mostly men, talked around their tables while waiting to hear the results of the morning’s s***t shooting round. But these participants weren’t there just for the thrill of hitting fast-flying clay targets. They entered the tournament for a cause that hit closer to home: supporting Dripping Springs schools.

“This is our fourth year to do the s***t shoot for the Education Foundation,” event chairperson Brent Howell said. “Last year we brought in a little over $110,000 for the foundation. Our goal is to do a little bit more this year.”

Hometown Missions started its next Home-in-a-Month project on Saturday, Apr. 5 with demolition of the 56-year-old manufactured home of Connie and Denis McGovern.

The couple have lived in the house on Harmon Hills Road for decades, but problems with collapsing floors, out-of-date electrical systems and a leaking roof meant it was time to say goodbye.

A crew of volunteers and local contractors will be building them a brand new house on the site over the next month, and Hometown Missions is seeking volunteers to assist with the project.

The featured presenters at this month’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Mar. 26 included several administrators from Dripping Springs ISD, who gave an update on the state of the district. That included information on the upcoming bond election.

“Early voting will run from Tuesday, April 22 to April 29, and then the big day, election day, is Saturday, May 3,” Deputy Superintendent Elaine Cogburn said.

Cogburn also talked about the upcoming community presentations that will go deeper into what is in the bond.

“On April 9, in the morning and the evening, 9:30 a.m. or 6 p.m., you can come to our Center for Learning and Leadership and we will go through all this in more detail,” Cogburn said. “We also have a very robust website for the 2025 bond outlining all these projects.”

On Saturday morning, Cadillac wakes up ready to play. As soon as he leaves his kennel, he rolls around on the floor, and once in the backyard, he starts racing around.

“I think that’s my favorite part,” Diego Montesinos said. “He comes out just bursting with energy.”

Diego and his mother, Angie Montesinos, have been serving as a weekend foster family for Cadillac, a former shelter dog from the Houston SPCA. Cadillac is in training with Service Dogs Inc., a nonprofit founded in 1988 and located in Dripping Springs for the last 21 years.

Spring has definitely sprung! A multitude of native plants are unfurling shiny new leaves displaying a mosaic of color, songbirds are bursting forth with songs to attract mates, butterflies and moths are ballooning from their chrysalis and cocoons, fox and cottontails are emerging from their dens.

Plant nurseries are crowded as folks search for unique treasures to expand their gardens or yards. Pops of bright color are tantalizing and irresistible. Yet many of these very colorful and tropical plants originate from Asia, Africa or other distant lands.

The Texas Well Owner Network, TWON, will host a water well screening April 7-8 for residents and well owners in Hays County. Water samples will be screened for contaminants, including total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate-nitrogen and salinity.

Residents wanting to have their well water screened should pick up a sample bag, bottle and instructions from the local AgriLife Extension office or groundwater conservation district office before April 7. There will be a $15 charge per sample for the screening, and residents may bring as many samples as they would like.

“It is very important that only sampling bags and bottles be used, and all instructions for proper sampling are followed to ensure accurate results,” Pigg said.

“We never set out to do anything like this. We had no experience, no prior plan. It was one of those things that just kind of hit us.”

The “we” is Noel McAlexander and Dave Sissler, two local cattlemen with a passion for team roping. They are also the founders of Texas Beef Initiative - a thriving nonprofit organization that has donated more than 450,000 meals to Texas food banks and charitable service organizations.

It's the first day of Spring! Where's your favorite place to see wildflowers?

Experts at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center are predicting it will be a mixed season for spring blooms this year.

“Last fall’s drought influenced the number of little wildflower plants we have growing out there,” said Andrea DeLong-Amaya, the center's horticulture director. “I think we’ve had enough precipitation to give them a boost and get them blooming but it’s too late in the game to germinate new seeds, which will affect the numbers of plants we have.”

It's St. Patrick's Day, so here's a little GREEN news!

More than 90 nonprofit staff, developers, engineers, architects, and government officials recently came together to discuss the future of water-resilient development in the Texas Hill Country. The event was organized by a coalition of nonprofits that included the Hill Country Alliance, the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance, Comal Conservation, and the Headwaters at the Comal.

Dr. Robert Mace, Executive Director at The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University, delivered the keynote address.

“The Hill Country is critically important - to rural towns and ranches, to big cities like Austin, New Braunfels and San Antonio, to downstream coastal communities and to all the species that depend on the water resources in our region and beyond,” Mace said.
