NEWS TEAM, ASSEMBLE! — Wise County Messenger staff piled into the news van for a quick photo op with some of their first-place awards after a strong showing at this year’s Texas Press Association and North and East Texas Press Association contests.

The team brought home three first-place honors and several other top-three finishes at the Texas Better Newspaper Contest presented Saturday during Texas Press Association's annual conference in Denton.

The Texas Newspaper Foundation renews our funding for the Texas Center for Community Journalism every June. As such, we prepare an annual report that recaps the past 12 months.

We sometimes forget how much we’ve accomplished and compiling the report reminds me of just how busy we’ve been.

It’s a worthwhile exercise for anyone— very reflective. We encourage you to give it a try with your personal business.

We are also behooved to share the here. We are grateful to the TNF for continuing to believe in our mission.

TCCJ 2024-2025 RECAP

1- We have hosted two workshops over the past year: broadcast and print design. Both in Fort Worth.

2- We have a sales workshop scheduled for July 25 in Fort Worth. I have provided the enrollment flyer and current registration list for that one too. We have room for 60 people. We have enrolled 26 in the first 24 hours since it launched.

3- We also co-hosted the Texas Community College Journalism Association annual convention along with Tarleton Student Media. I consider this a workshop for college journalists, though we did not expend any TCCJ funds for this event. It did lead to at least one student at two-year school finding at full time employment at a Texas Community Newspaper.

4-We are also planning one more workshop in 2025— “Solutions Journalism” in the fall.

In addition to these workshops, we also:

1- Represented Texas on the National Newspaper Association Foundation board (that I was appointed to) and at their annual convention in Omaha.

2-Delivered training sessions at each of the regional association conventions so far this year.

3- Are scheduled to deliver training session at Panhandle Press next month.

4- Are scheduled to provide a group training session to Granite Newspaper next week.
Delivered training sessions to both fall and spring conventions of the College Media Association.

5- Sponsored the TIPA Job Fair and Trade show.

6- Delivered training sessions at the TIPA convention as well as judged their live contests.

7- Will judge the Panhandle Press Better Newspaper contest again this year.

8-Made introductions that led to newspapers being saved in Silsbee, Lindale and (hopefully) one other that is pending .

9- Brought multiple Tarleton students to the TPA convention— three last year and four this year.

WORKSHOP REGISTRATION OPEN

Are you interested in producing quality video for your newspaper’s website?

Have you ever considered sponsored video content for advertisers on your social media channels?

If not, you should, because:

• 86% of U.S. adults say they (at least) sometimes get news from a smartphone, computer or tablet, with 57% saying they do so often.
• 58% of Americans prefer digital devices for news consumption and video is their preferred method of retaining news.
• 93% of adults in the United States get at least some of their news online, with a significant portion of this consumption happening through video content.
• A third of U.S. adults say they regularly get news on Facebook and YouTube— and social networks are built for video.

You probably know all this. You also know that your newsroom is situated perfectly to produce hyperlocal video news content for your community.

But, does the thought of shooting and editing quality video on a budget scare you?

We can help.

We're opening registration for our new workshop, Broadcast News for the Community Newspaper.

This is a chance to learn how to up your video content at your community newspaper.

You will come away with a concrete plan to make video work for you.

We'll look at the whole picture:

• Getting the gear you need. In most cases, quality video can be produced with a smart phone and an affordable editing software subscription. Your initial investment can be minimal and there are a few cheap tools and tricks that help you up your game. We’ll cover it all.
• Content programming. We’ll look at ideas on how to transition the stories you are already covering to broadcast format to compliment the long form journalism you are already doing.
• Production. We’ll get you up to speed on the software needed to produce quality video (many of you may already own it and not know it).
• Distribution. Once produced, we’ll look at how to get your video in front of your audience.
• Monetizing. It doesn’t do us any good if it doesn’t make us money. We’ll look at that too.

You will learn from Emmy, Peabody and Edward R. Murrow Award winning broadcasters who all have roots in community news. We’ll discuss how to localize national stories, write best for broadcast and ask questions that resonate on video.

Thanks to the generosity of the Texas Newspaper Foundation, the workshop is FREE.

Your tuition is FREE, your hotel room is FREE and your food is FREE.

All we ask is that you clear your calendar so that you can be at our Fort Worth Campus by 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 5 and be available through 4 p.m. Friday, June 6.

We’ll start Thursday afternoon before checking into the hotel and dinner. Then we’ll be at it all day Friday.

Please do not ask to come late or leave early.

These workshops are expensive, and they're jam-packed with great information and activities -- it would not be good stewardship of the TNF grant to allow people to take up a place and not attend the whole event.

We know stuff happens, though. That's why we maintain a waiting list, and people from that list are ALWAYS invited to attend when participants must cancel in advance.

This workshop is limited to a maximum of 25 attendees, and we try to balance the group geographically and by size of newspaper and other factors, so your interaction with your colleagues becomes one of the most valuable parts of your experience.

In exchange for the free workshop and meals and room, we'll work your butt off -- your day on Thursday begins at 1 p.m. and lasts through Friday. But, you'll come back to your newspaper with a concrete plan about how to launch your broadcast initiative.

All registration is online. To register, click here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfJPmh0D6IeE5cAq3J5DnJ8YRl1CPxFKo5PERze1ksIGICOWw/viewform?usp=header

Those selected to attend should receive a confirmation that you have received a spot in the workshop, or on the waiting list, within a few days.

This workshop will fill fast, so don't delay.

Hope to see you in a June in Fort Worth!
