It was such a pleasure to lead a corporate training workshop this week for the staff at Peach State Federal Credit Union and use materials from one of my newest books, “Beyond the Call: Service that Shines.”

Do you know the difference between a job, a career, and a calling?

A job is a short-term role performed as part of a routine task in exchange for compensation. This temporary position could be full-time or part-time and is defined by a job description. After identifying strengths and interests for different types of jobs, gaining experience, and completing targeted training toward a particular long-term career path, it becomes easier to recognize the difference.
Jobs can lead to a career; however, a career does not often lead to a job.
Not everyone has what it takes to provide great customer service. Those who are particularly effective with a service position will tell you they intentionally searched for a career that involves serving others. Having a calling is the best reason to accept a career in customer service. At this point, a career takes on an added sense of value and provides motivation to continue building service skills.
Participants in this workshop explored how various stages of Customer Service speak to our attitudes about serving. The enjoyment of serving others and resolving issues is the reason this book is titled, Beyond the Call: Service that Shines. A calling comes at a time when you find the type of work you love, and it happens to be a task that you can do easily. This task is needed by others, and it delivers personal satisfaction as you build customer loyalty for the organization.
Great businesses do not happen by accident, but by design.
Effective customer service is intentional.

If you feel like you’ve only been working to earn a much-needed paycheck but would prefer to invest your time truly enjoying what you do to serve others, then perhaps a customer service position is calling your name.

Are you interested in helping your employees improve their customer service skills. If so, let’s talk about it!
