JetBlue is set to strengthen its South Florida operations with the announcement of a new Airbus A220 pilot base at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, scheduled to open in January 2027. The move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to expand capacity, modernize its fleet, and reinforce Fort Lauderdale as a key operational hub.

The new base will support JetBlue’s growing A220 fleet, an aircraft known for its fuel efficiency, quieter cabin, and improved passenger comfort compared to older narrow-body jets. By positioning crews in Fort Lauderdale, the airline aims to streamline operations across Caribbean, domestic, and Latin American routes while improving scheduling flexibility and turnaround efficiency.

Fort Lauderdale has already become one of JetBlue’s most important focus cities, and this expansion signals continued long-term investment in the region. The A220 base is expected to support increased flight frequencies, new route development, and more consistent service reliability as demand grows across Florida and nearby international markets.

Industry observers see the decision as part of a wider trend of airlines concentrating resources in high-demand leisure and connecting hubs, where modern aircraft like the A220 can maximize profitability while enhancing the passenger experience.

JetBlue is preparing to launch its longest nonstop route yet, linking Boston with Milan Malpensa on an Airbus A321LR. The nearly 3,800-mile flight pushes JetBlue deeper into the transatlantic market, where it has been challenging legacy carriers with smaller long-range jets and premium Mint service. The route is notable because it uses a narrowbody aircraft on a city pair that would once have seemed built for larger widebodies or connecting traffic. The twist is that JetBlue’s biggest long-haul milestone is not coming from a giant jet, but from a single-aisle plane designed to make thinner international routes work. If successful, the Milan launch could strengthen JetBlue’s case that smaller aircraft can still make big transatlantic moves.
