Escaped to Itasca State Park last weekend. A plethora of poison ivy put a damper on the hiking and foraging along with a few thunderstorms, but still managed to find a few mushrooms! Picture 1: Pluteus cervinus (Deer Mushroom), Pictures 3 & 5: Amanita flavoconia (Yellow Patches) notice the poison ivy in picture 3, and Picture 6: Neolentinus lepideus (Trainwrecker). Found the Ramps! This photo shows two species of Ramps, the Broad Leaf Ramp and the Narrow Leaf Ramp. Broad Leaf Ramps (Allium tricoccum) are red stemmed on the top of the photo and the Narrow Leaf Ramps (Allium burdickii) are white stemmed in the bottom of the photo. Both taste similar and are usually found interspersed with each other in like patches. Both are members of the Allium genus.

Remember to sustainably forage these plants, they take up to 4 years to regrow if you take above the bulb, and up to 7 years if you take the bulb and leave the roots. Only take 20-40% of what you per patch, never take all within a grouping. These are able to be grown but also will likely take 7-10 years to fully grow before you are able to pick any.

Get outside and go find some spring edibles!

First time out foraging this year, not too much brewing yet. Some mushrooms left over from last year, a small patch of ramps, some bones, a birch polypore, Ganoderma applanatum, and fiddleheads just starting to crown. Morel spot was empty so far, but hopefully not for long.

Chicken of the Woods, species Laetiporus sulphureus 🐓 this is one of my favorite looking cultures. I love how the orange mycelium looks on these black plates too. This particular species was foraged in Minnesota.
