On The Record

On The Record In light of the post-covid renaissance of live shows, here is my concerted effort to light fire back into the local music and arts scene.

On The Record is a music & arts zine on a mission to:
Uplift arts and artists in Duluth-Superior,
Increase access to local arts news & opportunity,
Support a thriving arts scene & vibrant arts economy, &
Build community within & around the arts. On The Record is a biweekly Duluth-Superior music and arts zine with a resolute listing of music, theatre, art, and indie film events in the twin ports,

plus some content from That Sound Lady and local contributing writers/creators. The goal between On The Record zine and That Sound Lady services is to create a thriving arts ecosystem in Duluth and Superior that adapts and evolves with the community. It’s designed to be print-first for those burnt out on the digital-first world, but you can access it online anytime. Pick up a copy around town or check it out online at https://www.thatsoundlady.com/ontherecord and find your next show! If you love being in know of all the local arts happenings and you want this ecosystem to thrive, help keep this going and growing! I’ll keep spending the hours sleuthing so you don’t have to. Here’s what you can do to support:

- BECOME A SUSTAINING MEMBER. Help offset costs with $5 per month and that sound lady will hook you up with sweet sustainer perks: access to monthly arts giveaways, the google cal where new events post-print are added and where you’ll see events as far out as I find them to help with your long-term planning. Get all the details at thatsoundlady.com/support

- TIP IT. Use a card at thatsoundlady.com/support Or Venmo

- BARTER A SWEET ARTS GIVEAWAY ITEM: in exchange for some free ad space or poster distribution.

- BECOME A SPONSOR. If you and/or your business love the zine and its impact, let's chat

- BUY SOME AD SPACE. Looking for some extra promotion to a local and visiting audience of arts lovers? Check out the details and pricing at
thatsoundlady.com/ontherecord/ad-sponsor

- SUBMIT CONTENT. This is a zine for and by community. Submit short arts-related articles, black-and-white art/graphics/comics, and other content you’d love to see here.

- SUBMIT YOUR ARTS-RELATED EVENT. Ensure your show gets listed. (the term arts is fairly relative and subjective and generally pretty open)

- SEND YOUR IDEAS, FEEDBACK, HOT TIPS

Hiii did you know hermantown is considering an AI data center proposal? Did you know AI is facing all sorts of major law suits for stealing tons of artists’ and writers’ work? Please be sure to tell both Hermantown and Duluth city councils how you feel about that. Like asap.

One announcement we missed: if you have digital artwork files at CPL/AICHO make sure you get in touch with Jordon Johnson by OCTOBER 1ST to get them back. Email [email protected]. After 10/1 your files might get deleted.

Lots of big chaos out there in the world. I hope you soak up every bit of love and nostalgia from and .the.vibe 🖤🖤🖤

(If you’re able to send a token of gratitude for their writing and beautiful poetry, please note that their correct Venmo handle is @ JesscribeTheVibe. Lots of good stuff in this one - including the lowdown on our 2nd Anniversary Party THIS FRIDAY!!

go listen to ‘s Music From Macbeth in its entirety right now! Oo it’s so good!! I know I’ll be rereading The Scottish Play with this soundtrack real soon.

if you’re a Duluth area artist in critical need of giclée art prints, talk to the fine folks at

Peep those silly skeletons

And a bit of fridge magnet meditation with .the.vibe ‘s poem. So many of Jess’ poems are beautiful vignettes of stillness and playfulness. They give us lens to view the quiet and ordinary moments as deeply meaningful and comforting. 🖤

The death of poet laureate and activist Andrea Gibson has been hitting folks pretty hard. Thank you .the.vibe for sharing your words to help us process and also check in with ourselves. This season is so busy for so many of us; taking a moment to let our shoulders and jaws and eyebrows soften and ask our inner selves what we really need in order to feel at peace is so so important.

This whole edition is a check-in from a friend, including .thorn ‘s upcoming album release!! And .hiroko ‘s broad music scene check in about where our focus is when going to shows, highlighting .glad.youre.here Listening Room concert series

AND we hope to see you at On The Record’s 2nd Anniversary Party coming up Real Soon!! Things are coming together for August 8th and we can’t to gather alllll together!

Scoop up a copy around town! See you out there!

And a very big thank you to ! This celebration of our local artists and On The Record is made possible in (BIG) part by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, thanks to appropriations from Minnesota State Legislature’s General Fund! Our Arts Project Grant funding ensures that we’re able to adequately compensate collaborating artists and provide for the needs of both established and emerging artist selling pieces at the event- without charging any vendor fees. ARAC’s mission is to create a healthy art and cultural ecosystem by offering support and resources for artistic professional development and equitable access for arts organizations and individuals to benefit all communities. Their vision is one On The Record is also working toward: a THRIVING arts community in the arrowhead region. ARAC helps make it happen. OTR makes sure everyone knows about it! And those involved with ARAC are deeply connected to the work. Their board and staff roster is stacked with artists from the region that you know and love! Next round of ARAC grants opens up August 4! Check it out at council.org

And we would not be able to qualify for grants like this one without our phenomenal fiscal sponsor ! Find the whole host of ways they support artists at springboardforthearts.org

has graciously donated funding to help cover remaining costs of On The Record's Anniversary Party event! To see all this fantastic artwork, ya gotta have clear vision. And they 100% get and value that. They also have local artwork featured in their office and occasionally host artist pop-us, mini makers markets, and listening room performances.

Zen Eye Care is your neighborhood eye care practice where first time patients become life long friends. Dr. B, DQ, and Sonja (yup, Sonja Martin, the singer songwriter you know and love) are all phenomenal humans, and in their practice they take the time to get to know you and take care of you. Their mission is to support community and create meaningful relationships with those around them so that we all thrive together. These fine folks are committed to supporting organizations that promote education, humanitarian and social causes, local issues, wilderness conservation, arts and music, and overall sustainability of food sources and economics. They strongly believe that every dollar spent is a personal choice; choosing Zen for your eye care means that dollar is re-circulated into the hearts of our community.

At every turn, they try to buy from and support our local businesses. provides the yummy coffee at Zen. provides some of the plant-life enriching their space. They have a beautiful plant wall from . provided the wood you see from reclaimed projects. produced their head shots and business photographs. formerly Makers Mercantile is the gateway to some of their local artisan décor and used to pop up in their little camper-shop at Zen. Peep some of their office artwork by .art too!

I go Zen for my eyeball care and I think you should too! They're awesome. And they make whatever insurance or non insurance work. Give em a call to make an appointment: 218-522-4645

Community-building takes the time and capacity that’s hard to come by these days. We forget how to be relationship with each other. We forget all the good things social connection gives us when we’ve been too isolated too long or spiraling through social media scroll. Wanted to share this advisory/research highlight because getting people out in community and connecting around arts and creativity is a key part of what this whole project is all about.

Check out ‘s Dances On The Lakewalk festival this Friday/Saturday in the Rose Garden! (Also this Friday, I managed to put the wrong start time for a show that I booked 🤦‍♀️ w/ Josh opening for at is 7-9 pm - corrected in all the digital places but wrong in print. So sorry!)
