Rice Lake’s own Kenny “Kung Fu Kenny” Bednarek returned to his high school alma mater—armed not just with Olympic medals, but with a heart for the community. Last October, the school celebrated "Kenny Bednarek Day" in his honor: a packed gym, heartfelt thanks to his coaches, and powerful words of encouragement for students.

From breaking state records on the track to winning Olympic silver in the 200m in both Tokyo and Paris, Kenny’s story is deeply rooted in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. But what stands out even more? This hometown hero never forgets his roots.

As summer in the North is in full swing, there is still a loss felt from the legendary Lutsen Lodge. For generations, it was a beloved getaway for families, hikers, skiers, and anyone seeking the quiet beauty of the North Shore.

Although it’s been over a year since the lodge burned down in a fire, the memories live on in every story told, every photo saved, and every heart that called it home for a weekend (or a lifetime).

But there’s hope on the horizon! Plans are underway to rebuild Lutsen Lodge using its original architectural design, preserving the spirit of the place that meant so much to so many.

Mike Tester has been with us since the beginning—his illustrations brought our premiere and winter issues to life, and now he’s back in our summer issue with Home of the Hodag, a story set deep in the lore of Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

From city streets to cryptid legends, Mike’s work captures the magic of North like no one else. On his website, he states: “What I enjoy most about this process is sketching places and things with meaning and power, seeing them in new ways the more I look. There are so many details and so many ways to draw a scene.”

“The first thing you want to see when you open the door to your lake home isn’t a great room with high ceilings, it’s an unobstructed view of the water. After all, the lake is the entertainment and the view, the art installation. Which is why a lake needs two facades — one with curb appeal and the other showcasing the appeal of lake living.”

How’s this for a forested getaway? “Elevated on piers and with a minimal footprint, these cabins were thoughtfully designed to blend in with the topography. Each 1,400-square-foot cabin comfortably sleeps up to 10 guests, including a loft, custom bunk beds, and a private patio off the primary bedroom-with floor-to-ceiling windows facing north and south for privacy, you’d think your group has Superior National Forest all to yourselves.”
