Earlier this year, the Great Lakes Aquarium took in 28 animals from the closed attraction, SeaQuest, down in Roseville, MN. Since their arrival in Duluth, the animals have been finishing out their quarantine and are getting ready to head to their new exhibits!

Coming up later this year, the GLA will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in September. Over this last year, they were the second highest visited location in Duluth, having been beat out by Spirit Mountain.

The GLA has rotating exhibits, which means they redo them every 1-3 years. Right now, the GLA is preparing for a redo exhibit upstairs, Lava to Lakes, set to open Friday, May 23rd.The exhibit includes an up to date and to-scale model of Dunkleosteus, named Chunky, happening upstairs on the second floor. This is the “biggest exhibit design since the aquarium opened,” said the GLA in an Instagram post.

Be sure to give Frank, the giant Eelpout hanging in the front lobby, a greeting the next time you visit the aquarium!

World Press Freedom Day, May 3, is recognized worldwide, yet media expression remains a threat in the same places it’s celebrated. UMD students are promoting this day in the Kirby Garage Thursday, May 1.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students can stop by for buttons, snacks and learn about global media. The event is sponsored by The Bark, Lakevoice News and UNESCO. Other student media outlets are welcome to join.
The United Nations declared World Press Freedom Day in 1993. The day is a celebration of press freedom while honoring victims from media violence.
This day is an opportunity to “assess the state of press freedom throughout the world and defend the media from attacks on their independence,” said The United Nations.
Being a journalist is a dangerous job. Some stories have fatal conclusions.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) stated 2024 was the deadliest year for journalists in their history. Last year, at least 124 journalists and media professionals were killed in their line of craft — 70% by Israel.
World Press Freedom Day is not just for media professionals. Many worldwide are still fighting for open communication and accurate reporting.
Students can learn more about this day and what press freedom means to them on May 1.
