GREG ABBOTT IS ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION.

Abbott says Texas doesn't need teachers on H-1B visas because, “We have plenty of skilled teachers right here in Texas.”

Then Governor, where are they?

My wife Diana Loya For HD-87 has spent 20 years in public education. She continued her education while we sacrificed time and money as a family, taking on debt so she could become better at what she loves doing: serving our public schools.

And after 20 years, her salary is still nowhere near what someone with her education, experience and responsibilities should be making.

She isn't alone.

There are teachers raising families on one income, watching their health insurance costs rise while groceries, housing, utilities and everything else gets more expensive.

Qualified educators aren't disappearing because Texas suddenly stopped producing good teachers.

They're leaving because Texas has made it harder and harder to afford being one.

I'm not saying H-1B visas are the answer. I'm saying immigrant teachers aren't the problem.

After more than a decade as governor, Abbott shouldn't get to point at another group of people and pretend they created a teacher shortage on his watch.

You say Texas has plenty of skilled teachers, Governor?

You're right. We do.

They're working in the private sector. They're changing careers. They're leaving classrooms they loved because your policies made staying financially impossible.

Stop looking for someone else to blame.

Texas doesn't have a teacher talent problem. Texas has a teacher retention problem. And Greg Abbott has been governor for more than a decade.

VETERANS, THIS ONE SHOULD MAKE US STOP AND THINK.

When I was a young Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, General James Mattis was a god amongst men to us.

We repeated stories about him. One I’ll never forget was about Mattis showing up on Christmas and relieving a young Marine standing duty so that Marine could spend time with his family. That was the kind of leader we believed he was. He didn't just demand leadership from others. He lived it.

Before we crossed the Line of Departure into Iraq in 2003, Mattis sent us a message that I still remember today:

“Engage your brain before you engage your weapon.”

He told us to keep faith with the Marines to our left and right. He reminded us that our fight wasn't with the Iraqi people. And he ended with words every Marine knows:

“No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy.”

We would have followed that man into hell.

So when Trump picked Mattis as Secretary of Defense, I thought it was one of the best decisions he could have made. When Mattis eventually left, I wondered what happened.

Years later, hearing Mattis warn Americans about Trump should make every veteran stop for a minute.

This isn't some politician who never wore the uniform talking.

This is General Mattis.

A Marine who spent his life defending the Constitution and teaching Marines like me what leadership, discipline and honor were supposed to mean.

And he said this about Trump:

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people, does not even pretend to try. Instead, he works to divide us.”

Veterans, we took an oath to the Constitution. Not to a president. Not to a political party. Not to a personality.

We were taught to question bad leadership, protect the Constitution and put country before ourselves.

So whether you're Republican, Democrat or neither, ask yourself a serious question:

If you trusted General Mattis with the lives of Marines in combat, why wouldn't you at least stop and listen when he warns you about the Commander in Chief?

I followed Mad Dog Mattis in 2003.

I'd follow his example in 2030.

Country before party. Constitution before politicians. Semper Fi.

This is disheartening, but we have an option in the Panhandle to elect a Representative for the people. A hardworking career educator who cares about Amarillo and all the communities in District 87. If you haven’t looked at her platform, I suggest you take a look and see why she is running.

Amarillo, does this bother you?

Or at the very least, does it make you question whether the people we elect are representing our best interests?
Right now, Amarillo families are being asked to conserve water. Water your lawn less. Don't water outdoors on Saturday. Limit unnecessary water use. Even our public parks will follow the conservation schedule because every drop matters.

And I agree. Every drop DOES matter in the Texas Panhandle.

But while families are being asked to conserve, the City of Amarillo has entered into a 20-year agreement that allows Fermi America to purchase up to 2.5 million gallons of water PER DAY for Project Matador, the massive project officially known as the Donald J. Trump Advanced Energy and Intelligence Campus.

Think about that.

We are asking families to conserve water while committing millions of gallons a day to one massive corporate development.
And water isn't my only concern.
Carson County approved a 10-year tax abatement per phase for this project. Meanwhile, our communities are dealing with struggling schools, rising costs, infrastructure needs and families wondering whether they can afford their electric bills.

I have heard our State Representative tell us that people in the Panhandle want these data centers and are simply trying to figure out how to get the most out of them.

That is not what I am hearing.

I have been talking to people across House District 87. Democrats. Republicans. Independents. Conservatives. People who may never agree with me on every political issue.

I also attended a data center roundtable in Amarillo with Rep. Gina Hinojosa where Republicans, Democrats and Independents were invited to the same table.

What did I hear?
Concerns about water.
Concerns about electricity.
Concerns about pollution.
Concerns about noise.
Concerns about whether these projects will actually leave our communities better off than they found them.

Those aren't Democratic concerns or Republican concerns.
They're Panhandle concerns.

I am not against economic development. I want businesses to invest here. I want good jobs here. I want our children to have opportunities that allow them to stay in the Panhandle if they choose.

But if a corporation wants to build here, it should strengthen our community, not ask our community to sacrifice for it.

Protect our water.
Protect our electric grid.
Create good, lasting jobs.
Pay your fair share.
Invest back into the communities making your success possible.
And give the public a seat at the table BEFORE the deals are done.

This election doesn't require you to stop being conservative. It doesn't require you to change your values. And I don't expect everyone in HD-87 to agree with me on everything.

I am simply asking you to take a look at who I am and what I stand for.
I am a working-class career educator. I have spent my career serving our children and our public schools. I am raising my family here. I want safe communities, strong schools, affordable electricity, responsible economic growth and a Texas Panhandle where our children can still chase the American Dream.

Look at my platform. Ask me the hard questions. Disagree with me when you think I'm wrong.
And if you send me to Austin, hold me accountable.
Because whether you're a Republican, Democrat or Independent, your representative should answer to YOU.
Not a political party.
Not a campaign donor.
Not a giant corporation.
You.

WHY YOU SCARED, GREGORY?

If your record is as good as you say it is, defend it. Debate Gina Hinojosa.

Are you working for the people or the corporations writing the big checks?
Rural Texans deserve answers on data centers. Parents deserve answers on vouchers and public education. Working families deserve answers on affordability.

You don't own our vote, Governor. You have to earn it.

Stop refusing to even say Gina Hinojosa's name and get on the debate stage.

Texas deserves to hear from both of you.

YOU DON'T OWE GREG ABBOTT YOUR VOTE. HE HAS TO EARN IT.

Something is happening in rural Texas, and POLITICO is paying attention⁠.

Conservative Texans are questioning whether the people they've trusted for years are still representing them. And I think that's healthy.

Suzanne Bellsnyder, who comes from a small Panhandle community not far from Dumas, has been a great ally in making sure rural Texans are heard. She makes an important point in this story: people don't have to suddenly become Democrats to demand something different from their government.
Some conservatives quoted in this article are essentially saying: give Gina Hinojosa a chance. If she doesn't do what she says, vote her out next time.

THAT is how democracy is supposed to work.

You don't work for Greg Abbott. Greg Abbott works for you.

Your vote isn't something he owns because you've voted Republican your entire life. He has to earn it every single election.

And when people across rural Texas are worried about massive data centers, transmission lines, water, electricity, their land and the future of their communities, they deserve a governor who listens before decisions are made, not after people get angry.

Abbott has been in power so long that I believe he's forgotten something fundamental:

That office belongs to the people of Texas. Not Greg Abbott.

So to my conservative friends, I'm not asking you to stop being conservative.
I'm asking you to look at Gina. Listen to her. Ask her the hard questions. Hold her accountable.

And if you believe she'll represent your family and your community better than the man currently sitting in that office, BREAK RANKS.

Give her four years.

If she doesn't keep her word, vote her out.

But don't give anyone another four years simply because of the letter beside their name.

Politicians should be afraid of disappointing the people. The people should never be afraid of replacing the politicians.
