At first, she thought it was just a pinched nerve. The tingling in her feet would come and go, like the sensation of a limb waking up after falling asleep. But over time, the feeling didn’t fade—it got worse.
The tingling turned into burning. At night, it felt like her feet were being pricked with tiny needles, yet somehow, they were numb at the same time. She would reach down to touch them, expecting warmth, but they were cold—so cold it sent a shiver up her spine.
During the day, simple tasks became frustrating. She struggled to button her shirt because her fingers felt clumsy and unresponsive. Walking across the kitchen floor became an ordeal—sometimes she felt like she was stepping on broken glass, other times, like she was floating, unable to fully sense the ground beneath her.
One evening, as she was carrying a plate to the table, it slipped from her hands and shattered on the floor. She hadn’t even realized she was losing her grip. Her husband rushed in, concern etched on his face. “Honey, this isn’t normal,” he said.
Deep down, she knew he was right. The symptoms had crept up on her over the past year, but now, they were impossible to ignore. The numbness, the pain, the weakness—something was wrong.
As she stood there, staring at the broken plate, a thought settled in: What if this never goes away?
