Hippie Fest 2026: Groovy Vibes and Greek Heritage at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks

Greek Town hosted Hippie Fest—and it was a beautiful collision of cultures.

On Saturday, August 15, the strip along the Sponge Docks was loaded with vendors, food, music, and festival-goers from near and far. Belly dancers shared the stage with rock and roll. VW camper buses parked alongside sponge boats. And the music—from St. Pete Sons to The Black Honkeys Band—carried across the water as the sun set over the docks.

I walked the entire strip with my camera. What struck me most was how seamlessly Greek heritage and hippie culture coexisted.

Tarpon Springs is not just a tourist destination. It is a living, breathing community with layers of history—and on nights like this, those layers come together in beautiful, unexpected ways.

From Rogue Art to Local Legend: The Story of Dunedin's Oranges

In 2009, during the depths of the economic recession, oranges began appearing on Dunedin's walls. No one knew who painted them—until a surveillance camera caught two figures at 5:30 AM.

Steven Spathelf and Marsha Goins came forward and confessed. Their mission? To champion public art and boost local commerce. Their canvas? Any smooth wall they could find.

Over time, those rogue oranges became a Dunedin icon.

Today, Steven is battling dementia. But his family shares that he is still painting, still smiling, still creating. His oranges are more precious than ever—especially after Hurricane Helene claimed several originals.

I wrote a tribute to Steven, the orange graffiti, and the fragile legacy we must protect.

It was 2009. The economy had nose-dived, and foreclosures dominated the news. Across the country, people were losing their homes, their jobs, and their sense of certainty. But in Dunedin, something…
