Gary, Indiana—my hometown—is still recovering from the August 11 storm and prolonged Northwest Indiana power outages.

The frustration is real. The help is real. And the need is still real.

One NIPSCO vehicle was struck by gunfire. Nobody was injured, additional security was coordinated, and restoration work resumed.

Condemn that act—but do not use one person’s actions to condemn an entire city.

Churches, businesses, neighbors, volunteers and city partners have been providing meals, shelter, supplies, charging stations and medical oxygen. That help matters, but families are still dealing with spoiled food, missed work, disrupted schools and days without electricity.

Pray for Gary—but let that prayer move your feet.

The Restaurant Black Americans Fought Back Against | C**n Chicken Inn

This was a real restaurant. And Black Americans fought back against it.

The C**n Chicken Inn was founded in Salt Lake City in 1925 and later operated restaurants in Seattle and Portland. Its branding used an exaggerated racist caricature of a Black porter—an image that appeared on the buildings, menus, dishes, advertising and promotional materials.

But there’s another part of this history that deserves attention.

In 1930, Seattle’s NAACP and Black community leaders challenged the restaurant’s racist advertising. The Northwest Enterprise, a Black-owned newspaper, documented the fight.

That’s why telling the whole story matters.

Black history isn’t only a record of what was done to Black people. It’s also a record of how Black people resisted.

In 1996, I crossed paths with Lamont Bentley in Milwaukee—the young man many would come to know as Hakeem from Moesha.

At the time, it felt like a regular moment. Looking back, I realize I was standing inside a piece of Milwaukee and Black television history.

Some memories don’t reveal their value until years later.

One year ago, BlackStories365 started with a simple belief:

Black history is more than a month. It’s a movement.

If I’m being honest, I haven’t always been as consistent as I wanted to be. Life happens. Responsibilities happen. Sometimes the vision moves faster than the schedule.

But this page is still here because the mission is still here.

Thank you for every view, share, comment, conversation, correction, and lesson along the way. Every interaction reminds me that these stories matter.

As we enter year two, my goal isn’t perfection. My goal is to show up more consistently and deliver the stories, history, and content that I believe each person who follows this page deserves.

Here’s to preserving stories, honoring legacies, building bridges through history, and continuing to learn together.

One of the goals of Black Stories 365 is helping people understand that Black history is not separate from American history.

Today I wished several people a Happy Juneteenth. Some were Black. Some were White.

Every single one responded.

That’s the America I’d like to see more of.
