Can Mushrooms Save the Planet

Can Mushrooms Save the Planet "Can Mushrooms Save the Planet?" This the question which Rayne Grant poses.

A documentary exploring the mycelial web of life and its role in solving planetary challenges… from soil and ecosystems to sustainable materials, food systems, and the intelligence that connects all living things. She is on a mission and has set out to collect as much information that she can in order to find the answers...

Some people say that NOTHING can save our planet, others suggest the ide

a that Fungi have preceded us on this planet, and will continue it's cleanup process whether or not we are here.

What if it’s not always about finding something…
but about becoming still enough to receive it?

We move through life searching…
looking for meaning… answers… direction…

Scanning the world for something that stands out.
And sometimes… we do find it.

But something else happens when we stop.

When we pause…
when we soften…

when we let go of the need to find anything at all…
our awareness changes.

In the forest, you can feel this shift.

At first, you’re looking.
But if you stay long enough…
if you slow down…

if you just be with what’s around you…
the forest begins to reveal itself.

Shapes you would have missed.
Patterns you didn’t see before.

Life… quietly existing, waiting to be noticed.

And then suddenly…
there it is.
Not because you chased it…
but because you were present enough to see it.

This is true in foraging.
And it’s true in life.

Sometimes what we’re searching for
has been there the whole time…
waiting for us to arrive.

There’s something that happens to the mind when you step into the forest… especially above 10,000 feet in the Rockies.

At first… it’s subtle.

The light shifts… your breath deepens…
and something in you begins to soften.
This was one of those days…

deep in the Rockies at our annual Four Corners Mycological Society gathering
at Lizard Head Pass near Telluride, Colorado.
A small group… 30–50 people each year…
wandering, learning, breathing it all in.
Your nervous system starts to reset.

Stress lowers… your attention opens.
This is forest bathing… and there’s real science behind it.

Time in the forest supports dopamine and serotonin…
helping regulate mood, focus, and that quiet sense of well-being we’re all craving.

And then there’s something even older…

The search.
Walking slowly… scanning…
until suddenly...
you see it.

Coral… Russula… chanterelles glowing from the forest floor.

That moment doesn’t just feel good…

it lights up an ancient reward system in the brain.
Sometimes you find mushrooms…
sometimes you don’t.
But every time…
you find something.

When was the last time the forest completely changed your mind… like you could actually feel your nervous system shift?

At first… it’s just noise.
Trees. Texture. Light.

And then something shifts…

Your thoughts slow down.
Your breathing deepens.
Your attention softens.

This isn’t just a feeling…

It’s something scientists call Attention Restoration Theory (ART).

When you spend time in natural environments, your brain moves out of overload… and into a state of gentle awareness.

Stress hormones begin to drop.
Your nervous system resets.
Your mind stops gripping… and starts receiving.

Trees release compounds that support your immune system…

the air itself becomes part of the medicine.

And in that state…
something opens.
You start to feel connected again.

And then… you start to notice things you couldn’t see before.

Patterns.
Life.
Connection.

The forest doesn’t just feel good…
it shifts your nervous system.

This is why so many of us feel called to the woods…

Not just to escape...
but to remember how to see again.

🌲🍄

Have you ever felt that moment… when the forest “turns on” for you?

Above 10,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains near Telluride… something shifts.

The air thins.
The noise quiets.
And your body has to pay attention.

At this elevation, oxygen levels drop, and your system responds… your breath deepens, your heart works a little harder, your awareness sharpens. Your body is adapting in real time.

And today being Easter… I can’t help but think about the hunt.

That feeling of searching… scanning… knowing something is there before you see it.

Whether it’s Easter eggs… or mushrooms…
It lights something up in the brain.
There’s actual science behind that.

Foraging activates dopamine... not just when you find something, but while you’re looking.

The anticipation…
the pattern recognition…
the moment of discovery.

Out here, it’s not eggs hidden in the grass…

It’s something like Boletus rubriceps… the Rocky Mountain porcini… waiting quietly beneath the surface, asking you to slow down enough to notice.
Places like this strip everything back.

No excess.
No noise.
No illusion of control.
Just breath…
movement…
and presence.

The mountains don’t rush you.
They don’t accommodate you either.
They simply ask you to meet them where you are.

And if you do…
Something in you remembers.
