If you have a disability or love someone with a disability, please pay close attention to this.

The Olmstead Act (1999) determined that people with disabilities should be able to live and receive services within communities in the least restrictive environment under the ADA.

The recent memo from this administration shows that they believe that, contrary to Olmstead, people with disabilities can and should be segregated/institutionalized.

While the opinion memo issued does not change current law, it shows how this administration is positioning itself to warehouse people with disabilities instead of supporting integrated and human care.

If you have concerns about the recent removal of Pride displays from our libraries in Durham, the next County Commission Meeting is Monday June 8th at 7pm.

Take note that while the decision was reversed, the library workers union has indicated that librarians were verbally instructed to remove programming from the calendar around both Black History Month and Pride. Those have not yet been restored.

Additionally, the Commissioners voted to defund Durham Pride last year. That funding has not yet been restored.

If we want Durham to be for everyone we need these issues to be addressed transparently and with community input.

Durham County Commissioner Nida Alam came out to the drag story hour response to the recent library director’s choice to remove Pride displays.

This decision has been reversed and Pride displays will be returned. However, this also comes on the heels of last year’s County Commission decision to defund Durham Pride.

The library workers union also shared that they were verbally instructed by the county to change aspects of both Black History month and Pride month as well as programming.

I asked Commissioner Alam if there is a commitment to return funding for Pride and she affirmed that she aims to champion that. We should all be watching for accountability on these issues. Words and actions need to align!

Durham is for all of us. Let’s keep it that way.

As a newly graduated Carolina Tar Heel, I don’t speak for the UNC system, but I will speak to my experience.

UNC’s policy of “neutrality” resulting in the deletion of the graphic below is a far cry from “Equality”. It was their “Equality Policy” that was used to justify removing said Pride post.

That version of “Equality” sends the message that q***r people aren’t welcome or safe at UNC system schools.

While I experienced the welcoming attitudes of many faculty and staff members during my program, I also had religious propaganda placed on my seat on more than one occasion.

I know too that students discuss with one another before they pick their classes which professors are safe for q***r, neurodivergent, and disabled scholars. Classes are scheduled accordingly.

I know that students who tried to address the posting of harmful anti-trans content by an individual in their cohort were sent an email that basically scolded them for their attempts at community accountability.

What I know is that UNC’s “Equality Policy” isn’t creating a healthier learning environment. Rather that policy uses words to duct tape people’s mouths closed, make instructors fearful, and make historically excluded people feel small.

And from what I’m told, the department from which I got my degree is better than most.

Political neutrality is violence at a time when politics is being used to harm specific groups of people (which historically…is always in the United States).

Hey! Hi! Hello! Mudge would like to welcome you to Pride Month!

Over here we’re q***r all year, but in June we go extra hard for all things LGBTQIA+.

For many years Pride has been about celebrating our identities and hard won freedoms for our community.

But the first Pride was an uprising, a fight against the oppression of q***r folx. The need for that fight continues to be relevant as we see LGBTQIA+ rights under attack, the safety of q***r people threatened, and true allyship diminishing.

So, Mudge and I are taking on this month full of fight and q***r joy.

Special shoutout to the Holly Springs town council for issuing the town’s first Pride proclamation. Showing up and making space matters!

This weekend I graduated from UNC with my MSW; I’m officially a social worker.

A second Master’s degree after 19 years as a public school teacher.

My life has been a journey of helping others with the goal of becoming the adult I needed when I was growing up.

And it was possibly one of the most euphoric moments of my life to hear my chosen and now legal name read to receive my degree, “Jack Rustin Turnwald.”

The nature of the life I’ve led feels horribly juxtaposed to the information I got the day after graduation. The U.S. government published a document, signed by the President, naming being pro-transgender as a classification for people to be hunted and k!lled.

But I will not hide under a rock, namely because my trans identity doesn’t make me a criminal. Supporting the well-being of other trans people doesn’t make me a criminal. And it doesn’t make you one either.

What would be criminal is for the government to be permitted to murd*r trans people because our existence makes folx uncomfortable.

I’m going to continue to be loud and visible. I hope you work on your discomfort.

Welp, hope everybody is making sure they have their KN95s and hand sanitizer ready. I think I’ll get a bidet this time around. 🍑 💧

Remembering when we were told we were going to be out of school for two weeks and my principal laughed at me when I said, “See you in a year to 18 months,” as I walked out the door with ALL my stuff.

And then when we returned in person and everyone kept talking about getting back to normal and I said, “Normal’s never coming back; normal now is just the lull until the next pandemic.”

And I don’t say this s**t because I want to be a downer. I say it because my pattern recognition has a pretty reliable track record. And all I’ve ever wanted is for people to learn to care for each other in ways that we might survive, mitigate harm, and maybe even experience some joy together.

Also, I’m gonna go on ahead and sound like a wild conspiracy theorist…

…this is probably how they cancel the midterms.

…I am an elder millennial about to accomplish a life milestone (graduating with my second Master’s), so probably due for another apocalyptic world changing event. 🫠
