Why did Jesus descend into hell after declaring, “It is finished”?

He did not descend to continue suffering for our sins or to enter the place of final punishment. Christ descended into Hades—the realm of the dead—to proclaim His victory over sin, death, and the powers of darkness.

His descent was not further humiliation. It was the announcement of His triumph.

“Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.”

Matthew 24:40 is frequently interpreted as a description of the rapture—but is that actually what Jesus meant? The surrounding context may point to a very different conclusion.

What happened between Jesus’ death and resurrection?

When the Apostles’ Creed says that Jesus “descended into hell,” it does not mean that He continued suffering or entered the place of final punishment. His work of atonement was already complete: “It is finished.”

The creed is speaking of Hades—the realm of the dead.

The New Testament points toward a real descent, and the earliest Christians understood it as Christ’s victorious entrance into death’s domain. He proclaimed His triumph, broke the power of death, and emerged as the conqueror.

Does Paul actually compare Christian Torah observance to returning to pagan bo***ge?

In Galatians 4, Paul warns Gentile believers that adopting the observance of “days and months and seasons and years” as a covenant obligation would return them to the same kind of slavery from which Christ had set them free.

Waiting on God can be difficult, especially when we can’t yet see what He is doing.

But biblical waiting isn’t doing nothing. It’s continuing to trust the Lord because we know who He is. Isaiah reminds us that the everlasting God “does not faint or grow weary,” and He gives strength to those who hope in Him.

So when the way ahead feels uncertain, keep trusting. Keep walking. The God you are waiting on is faithful.

“But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength.” — Isaiah 40:31
