With the government shutdown, SNAP benefits are expected to end tomorrow November 1.

The Durham Community Fridges (DCF), which provide FREE Food in a “take what you need, leave what you can” community model, are especially important. Take note of these new changes.

🗄️ A new community fridge (two!) will be setup at The Scrap Exchange in Lakewood (2050 Chapel Hill Rd). Celebrate this new fridge opening tomorrow Saturday November 1 from 1-4 pm. Free meals will be served.

🗄️ The existing North Durham community fridge outside Omie’s Coffee Shop (2300 N Roxboro St) will shut down in November as mandated by Omie’s landlords. Good news, DCF will transition to a new fridge also in North Durham. Stay tuned for details.

🗄️ The community fridge near downtown at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church (1902 W Main St) remains open.

📍 Scrap Exchange (1901 Chapel Hill Rd) – NEW
📍 St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church (1902 W Main St) – EXISTING
📍Omie’s Coffee Shop (2300 N Roxboro St) – CLOSING in November, new location TBD

Vendors and customers at the Durham Food Hall were shocked today when ICE recruitment ads offering a $50,000 signing bonus appeared on the venue’s TV screens.

Durham Food Hall stated that the ads were run by a third-party service without their knowledge and that they have since suspended their contract with the provider, further issuing the statement:

“We have been using a third party service on our TV screens in the hall. They displayed an ad that goes against our values that we DID NOT approve. We suspended our contract with them immediately.

We are so sorry to anyone we offended, as this is not what we believe in. We are a safe space open to everyone and do not tolerate that message on our screens.”

In a show of solidarity, vendors including Ex-Voto, Patty Boy, and Little Barbs Bakery took to social media to express their outrage.

Some even closed for the day, vowing not to reopen until they receive assurances that such ads will not appear again.

This past Saturday, Durham’s Second No Kings Protest drew thousands more than the first rally in June.

This time with participation from other local organizations including union workers and prominent speakers like NAACP civil rights leader Reverend Dr. William Barber II.

Demonstrators gathered at Durham Central Park and paraded around downtown voicing concerns over free speech, imigration, workers’ rights, and other issues.

Terrifying ordeal at the North Carolina State Fair as the Vertigo ride stalled, suspending riders 100 feet in the air for 45 minutes.

Crews eventually brought everyone back to the ground. Ride was reinspected and cleared to operate.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. The ride company is offering anyone that was stuck a complimentary ride.

After nearly two decades, the City of Durham is transforming a long-defunct railroad corridor into the Durham Rail Trail — a 1.8-mile public greenway featuring walking paths, community amenities, and public art installations.

Stretching from Avondale Drive and Trinity Avenue to just northeast of the Durham Amtrak Station on West Chapel Hill Street, the trail will form a crescent around Downtown Durham.

Once completed, it will link key destinations and neighborhoods including Downtown Durham, the Innovation District, Central Park and DIY Districts, Trinity Park, Pearl Mill Village, Old North Durham, Duke Park, and the Avondale Drive–Trinity Avenue business district.

The project’s $45 million budget has already been allocated. Construction starts January 2027 with completion expected by June 2028.
