In the Gospel of John, we are given a stark, powerful detail: Mary was standing by the cross. She did not flee, collapse in despair, or hide her face from the heartbreak before her. She simply stood.
The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is not a celebration of grief, but a celebration of love that stays. When Simeon prophesied a sword would pierce her soul, Mary offered her complete "yes" to God. At Calvary, she lived that "yes" in its rawest form. She could not stop the nails, silence the crowd, or lift her Son from the wood. Yet her faithful presence became her deepest act of love.
In His final moments, Jesus looks down and forms a new family: "Woman, behold, your son!" and to John, "Behold, your mother!" At the foot of the cross, we were entrusted to her care.
When life brings us pain we cannot fix and burdens we cannot lightened, Our Lady teaches us how to bear them. She promises that we never suffer in isolation. Today, let us take Mary into our own homes and hearts, trusting that the mother who stood faithfully at the cross stands faithfully with us in every trial.
“Immaculate Heart of Mary, my mother, lead me to your Son. Please receive my prayers and make them beautiful for Christ. Sacred Heart of Jesus, reveal my heart to yours. Open it and lay it bare in front of you. Discern and purify the innermost thoughts of my heart. Fill my heart with a love that burns with such a pure and radiant love for you that others are attracted to you by this love.”
