County Judge Orders Mandatory Evacuation of Quemado and Normandy Amid Rising Floodwaters
QUEMADO, TX – July 14, 2025 — Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantu has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the communities of Quemado and Normandy as floodwaters continue to rise dangerously following severe overnight rainfall.
According to the official declaration from the Judge’s Office, immediate evacuation is required to protect lives and support emergency response operations. The decision was made after heavy upstream rainfall sent a surge of water toward Maverick County, compounding an already critical situation on the ground.
Officials report that an additional six inches of rainfall is currently moving downstream and will significantly impact the low-lying areas surrounding Quemado and Normandy. The order went into effect Monday afternoon and applies to all residents in both communities.
County officials activated the Maverick County Emergency Operations Center, which is coordinating rescue and shelter operations. Residents needing help or information about emergency shelter can contact the center at 830-421-5151 or 830-421-5122. For life-threatening emergencies, residents are urged to call 911 immediately.
“If water is currently near or entering your property, do not wait. Leave now,” the county’s alert warned. Conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, making early evacuation critical.
Judge Cantu emphasized that failure to evacuate could endanger lives and impede first responders trying to navigate flood conditions and carry out rescues.
The county is urging the public to stay alert, monitor official updates, and avoid returning to the area until authorities declare it safe.
“We are taking every necessary measure to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Judge Cantu. “This is not a time to delay or take chances. The water is rising quickly, and it will get worse before it gets better.”
A temporary emergency shelter has been set up at the June Edwards Community Center located at 20160 U.S. Highway 277 N. Quemado, TX. The center is open to all displaced residents until further notice.
Emergency officials, law enforcement, and county staff remain on the ground assisting with evacuations, providing transportation, and assessing infrastructure risks in affected areas.
The National Weather Service has not yet issued a flood crest prediction for the Rio Grande and its tributaries, but local authorities are closely monitoring the situation as more rainfall continues to affect upstream areas.
Additional updates are expected throughout the evening as conditions develop.
