Fox Sparrows are pretty common summer birds in the Colorado Rockies, but getting a picture of one can tough. They’re skulky and spend most of the day hidden in dense vegetation, so I went to Sylvan Lake State Park near Eagle to try to get my first photos of one.

After hiking around the wetlands for a while and hearing Fox Sparrows all around me, one finally popped out of the brush long enough for me to get my first photos ever.

While hiking in Glenwood Canyon recently, I finally found a bird I’d been looking for in Colorado for years: Band-tailed Pigeons.

I’d seen them before in Costa Rica, where they’re fairly common, but I’d never managed to find one in the United States. They were actually the last regularly occurring dove or pigeon I still needed in the country, so it was great to finally check them off the list.

They were perched on a burned tree left behind by the 2020 Grizzly Creek Fire, which made them easy to spot, just a few steps from the trailhead. Also a great reminder that these habitats are fragile, especially with the dry and hot summer in Colorado this year.

2026 has apparently become the year of the hummingbird for me.

I’ve seen 42 different species so far.
Most of them came in Mindo, Ecuador, where hummingbirds ranged from the tiny Violet-bellied Hummingbird to the Empress Brilliant and the incredible Violet-tailed Sylph, which has the ridiculously long tail in the final photo.

Southern Arizona was another major stop early in the year, with Costa’s, Anna’s and Rivoli’s Hummingbirds around Tucson and Madera Canyon. But the hummingbird I see most is definitely the Broad-tailed Hummingbird, which is all over the Vail Valley throughout spring and summer.

Today’s Target Bird: Willow Flycatcher

I saw reports on eBird that willow flycatchers were being seen at Salt Creek in Eagle, Colorado, so I went there to find them.

After walking around the area for a while and turning up great Colorado birds like Wilson’s Snipe and Golden Eagle, I finally heard a Willow Flycatcher calling from near the trail and managed to get a few photos while it sat on a branch over the creek.

The photos from Peru and Ecuador have been trickling out slowly, but this was actually the last birding stop of the trip: Sendero Frutti Tour & Birdwatching in Pichincha, Ecuador.

Like the rest of Mindo, this place was full of birds, including a lot of Chocó endemics and the colorful tanagers and barbets that were all over the valley. It was cool to see a female Red-headed Barbet peeking out from a nest cavity on the property, Yellow-rumped Caciques feeding, a ridiculous looking Red-billed Scythebill, and a White-bearded Manakin.
