These historical photographs offer a glimpse into the journeys of Indian indentured migrants—families who left everything they knew, crossed oceans, and built new lives thousands of miles from home.

Mala and the Journey Seed is inspired by these remarkable journeys and the roots they carried with them.

Did You Know?

Between 1838 and 1917, more than 1.5 million Indians left their homes as indentured laborers and journeyed to places such as Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa.

Many signed agreements they could not read and boarded ships bound for lands they had never seen.

🌱 The Journey Seed tells this history through the eyes of a child, transforming a global story of migration into a personal story of family, resilience, hope, and the meaning of home.

After slavery was abolished, the British Empire turned to a new source of labor, recruiting workers from India for plantations in faraway colonies. What followed was one of the largest migrations in modern history.

Seeing a mango-inspired accessory on a global stage reminded us how deeply certain things stay connected to our roots.

In Indian culture, the mango is more than just a fruit. It carries memories of summer vacations, family gatherings, street markets, celebrations, stories, and childhood.

That love and nostalgia inspired us to create our bilingual picture book Phalon Ka Raja Aam — to help children experience not just the language, but also the emotions, traditions, and cultural memories connected to something as simple and beloved as a mango.

Because sometimes, culture lives in the little things we grow up with.
