UNSOLVED HOMICIDE: 1973, Gardner, Massachusetts

On February 2nd, 1973, 19-year-old Mark Twohey disappeared after attending a dance at the Polish American Citizens Club in Gardner, MA. What happened after that is a mystery.

3 weeks later, on February 21, 1973, his body was found near Hobbys Pond, 55 feet off Raymond Street in Gardner. At the time, police stated that he had been stabbed and left for dead and his death was ruled a homicide. Police have released little info about the investigation.

Because of the passage of time, investigators continue to rely on community memory, old leads and new tips. People who lived in Gardner or neighboring towns in 1972-1973, or who knew Mark or saw him around that period, may hold pieces of information that could move this case forward. Even small or seemingly minor recollections may be useful.

George Barnes, a friend, wrote an article about Mark for the Telegram, saying, “At the time of his death, Mark and I had fallen out of touch, but I have not forgotten him. He was one of the funniest people I have ever known, witty and a little crazy. He and Craig, like myself and others in my family, spent a lot of time visiting the home of my Aunt and Uncle Haley in Phillipston. There were often more than a dozen kids at the house at any given time, and Mark was usually at the center of fun or mischief. I still smile a little when I think of him, before the memory of his death takes that away.”

Holly Kristen Piirainen was a ten‑year‑old girl from Grafton, Massachusetts. In the summer of 1993 she was visiting her grandparents’ summer cottage in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. On the morning of August 5, 1993, she left the cottage around 11:45 a.m. to walk a short distance with her five‑year‑old brother to see some puppies at a nearby home. Her brother returned without her, and when she did not come back her father began searching and discovered one of her sneakers on the roadside. Local and state police, sheriff’s departments and volunteer searchers from multiple states launched an extensive search but were unable to find her.

After more than two months, on October 23, 1993, hunters discovered Holly’s skeletal remains in a wooded area off Five Bridge Road in Brimfield, Massachusetts, several miles from where she was last seen. The state medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, but because her remains were in an advanced state of decomposition, investigators were unable to determine the exact cause of death or whether she was sexually assaulted.

Over the years, investigators pursued various leads. There were reports from the day she disappeared of a man in a pickup truck seen near the area, and in 2012 authorities announced that forensic evidence found near her remains was linked through DNA testing to a Springfield man who had died in 2003. That link was considered significant but did not result in an official suspect designation or charges, and the man could not be questioned. Investigators continue to review and test evidence as forensic technology improves.

Among the items recovered near her remains was a white tank top with “Boston” written on it. Law enforcement released the image of the shirt and appealed to the public for help identifying it.

In recent years, the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police have also employed modern investigative techniques including forensic genetic genealogy and have organized voluntary DNA sampling events to help generate leads. The DA’s office continues to appeal for information from anyone who might know something about the case or recognize items of evidence.

Despite more than three decades having passed, no one has been arrested or convicted in connection with Holly Piirainen’s abduction and murder. The case remains open, and authorities strongly encourage anyone with information to come forward.

*** Is your family from South Carolina? Do you have a "mystery" unaccounted family member, that hasn't been heard from since 1995 or before, likely born around 1945- 1965? She likely never gave birth, was possibly a smoker, and had a traumatic event happen in her life, that required multiple surgeries on her brain and right leg, among other injuries?*** On October 7, 1995 in Sanibel, Florida, four fishermen saw something unusual floating in the water after a heavy storm near York Island, south of St.James City, just off the southern tip of Pine Island. The Lee County Sheriff's Office recovered a sail bag, with a red sleeping bag inside, weighted down with a battery typically used for boats or golf carts....but most disturbingly, inside of the sleeping bag, was the body of an unidentified female, whose death occurred weeks prior. She was between 30- 50 years old, 5'2ish, 115 pounds ish, dark blonde/strawberry blonde hair (although FBI declared the color brownish red), red painted fingernails, a crooked bottom left tooth, her right ear was pierced twice, while the left ear was once, was wearing a metal ring with ivory stone, and a watch which stopped at September 25, at 12:50 (possibly the time she was thrown in the water?), and, of most confusion, she was wearing a reddish maroon v-neck pullover scrub type top, with "Charleston, SC VA Hospital". It's important to note, that that particular facility changed hands in 1991, which is now known as the Ralph Johnson VA Medical Center, 4 years before the victim was found. Authorities found that the scrub top was issued to cath employees before 1991, and nobody recognized this victim as working there. I personally think this article of clothing could have come from a family member or friend who gave it to her in a pinch, or perhaps, even her killer?! Perhaps she was a patient there, and this was left over at the facility and it was given to her, as she had no street clothes to be discharged in. The most unique detail that could solve this case, was the history of traumatic injuries that portrayed on the women- she had a healed left craniotomy scar, which was closed with staples (reasons for this surgery are an aneurysm, trauma, tumor, etc.- but judging by the other healed injuries, I tend to feel like this was trauma related, in order to access the injured part of the brain), fracture of the right leg (ankle according to the FBI, which required pins), a fracture of the right arm and left clavicle. It's important to note that certain style of procedure was only performed by 1,000 doctors in the country at that time ( VA hospitals? Universities?) Dentals and DNA are available. Recent DNA has shown possible distance relatives in 11 small towns around Orangeburg, South Carolina. Please message me here if you need more information or believe that you know this woman. Lee County Sheriff's Office (239)477-1189. The FBI is also investigating. More information can be found in the comments.
