Carpentersville will celebrate Mexican independence this Saturday, Sept. 12, with the annual El Grito parade and festival.

The parade steps off at 11 a.m. from the Meadowdale Shopping Center area near the water tower and heads through town, featuring live marching bands, traditional dancers, floats, horses, and classic cars.

Afterward, the celebration moves to Carpenter Park from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. for food, live music, and family activities.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northwest Suburbs will celebrate the official ribbon-cutting for the new Woodlands Teen Impact Center at 4:30 p.m. this Thursday, Sept. 10.

The $13.2 million, 40,000-square-foot facility at 770 Navajo Drive in Carpentersville is designed to serve up to 550 middle and high school students from District 300 and District 220 with after-school and summer programming.

If you’ve ever biked or walked the Fox River Trail toward Elgin, you’ve probably spotted the stone castle along the river and wondered what it looks like on the inside.

For the first time ever, Pratt’s Castle will open its doors to the public as part of the 44th Annual Historic Elgin House Tour this weekend, Sept. 12–13.

Visitors will be able to cross the renovated drawbridge to view the first floor, which features medieval artifacts, a curved staircase, battle windows, and views of the moat. The tour also includes five historic homes in Elgin’s Near East neighborhood.

A serious motorcycle crash on Monday afternoon in Algonquin remains under investigation, police said.

While initial reports indicated the crash was fatal, Algonquin Police later clarified that the motorcyclist survived and was taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with severe injuries. The rider's current condition has not been released.

A passerby discovered the injured motorcyclist in nearby bushes around 5 p.m. near Compton Drive and Magenta Lane, just southwest of Algonquin Road, and called 911.

A crash involving serious injuries, which was previously reported as a fatal crash, is under investigation in Algonquin.

Community Unit School District 300 has been awarded $193,064 as part of the state's latest round of Teacher Vacancy Grants.

The Illinois State Board of Education selected 100 districts across the state facing staffing challenges to share $15 million in funding. Districts can put the funds toward hiring bonuses, retention stipends, tuition assistance, mentoring programs, or classroom resources.

UPDATE: roadway is open.

Heads up if you are heading south toward Elgin: A stalled semi has closed southbound State Street (Route 31) at Kimball Street.

Lawrence Avenue is also closed between State and Crystal. Elgin Police advise using an alternate route until the truck is cleared.
