License plate data collected by East Hampton Village’s Flock Safety cameras were accessed by outside law enforcement more than 5.4 million times during the 12 months that ended in February.

During that period, authorities in Florida made the most use of the village’s data, with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office leading the way with nearly 87,000 searches.

Together, Florida and Georgia accounted for more than 20 percent of all Flock Safety searches of East Hampton Village data.

Yet the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office ranked just fourth nationwide in total requests, trailing the California Highway Patrol; the Houston police, and Kentucky’s Louisville Metro Police Department.

Twenty years after purchasing the parcel at 472 Old Stone Highway in Springs and opening Old Stone Market, Wolf Reiter and Vicky Sdrougias called it a career. The market closed, much to the sorrow of many, on Monday.

Formerly Marty’s Deli, the year-round spot served homemade hot meals, sandwiches, pastries and croissants, and other delicacies.

Some customers, upon learning of the market’s imminent closing, started to cry, Ms. Sdrougias said. “You don’t know what this place has meant to me,” was their message, she said, as they shared tales of how Old Stone’s offerings helped them endure crises like divorce and the pandemic. One was “fondling my homemade jam and crying the other day,” she said. “I had to go give a big hug.”

The 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills this week is testing the patience of golfers and fans alike. The wind on the 7,440-yard course is a challenge for even the most talented golfers. The traffic on Montauk Highway is a hurdle for spectators. Tackle those two things successfully and the experience is unmatched.

“So I think this course, it demands so much patience, and it can really lure you into taking on things that you probably shouldn’t,” said Rory McIlroy, who won his second consecutive Masters Tournament in April, speaking Tuesday at an on-site press conference. “I think it’s the best championship test in the country. I think it tests all aspects of the game: driving, iron play, you need to have your wits about you on the greens. It’s a lot of strategy, thoughtfulness.”

Republican Representative Nick LaLota has likely cut off East Hampton Town and Village from receiving federal dollars for community project funding requests.
These requests, also known as “earmarks,” bear no relation to our local C.P.F., the community preservation fund that comes from a real-estate transfer tax.
The news was delivered in a letter to town supervisors, mayors, and other local government officials yesterday.
“While municipalities retain broad authority over local matters, community project funding is a discretionary congressional appropriations process,” wrote the congressman, who is up for re-election this fall.

At its final meeting of the academic year Tuesday, the East Hampton School Board agreed to name the new pool at the high school the John J. Ryan Sr. Aquatic Center.

Mr. Ryan, 91, has served on the school board for a combined 28 years. He was first elected in 1993 and served until 2011, then was elected again in 2016 and served until this year. He lost a reelection bid last month by just 26 votes, on the same night that voters approved a $45.68 million bond proposition to fund an indoor pool with a diving board. The pool naming will cement his place in East Hampton history.

Two Suffolk County Water Authority drinking wells close to the intersection of Cove Hollow Road and Montauk Highway have been contaminated by so-called “forever chemicals” from the nearby East Hampton Energy Storage Center, alleges a civil suit filed by the water authority against the storage center, LG Chem, and LG Energy Solution last week in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

In response, the water authority has removed the two wells from service and restricted the use of two other nearby wells.

Patrick Derenze, the town’s public information officer, said Friday morning that approximately 30 private wells will need to be tested as well.

For years, the names etched into weatherworn headstones faded quietly beneath layers of dirt, lichen, and time —until Jason Bono began restoring them one at a time. With some brushes and a specially made cleaning solution, along with a reverence for local history, the 25-year-old has turned headstone cleaning into a small business, Hampton Headstone Care, and a history project.

The annual fireworks show at Main Beach in East Hampton Village, once a Fourth of July tradition but more recently held in mid to late-August, will once again take place on July 4, when the nation will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding.

Bradford Billet, chairman and chief executive officer of the East Hampton Village Foundation, told The Star this week that the village and the foundation, in collaboration with the East Hampton Fire Department, East Hampton Town Natural Resources Department, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, secured approval to hold the fireworks display on Independence Day. “It took a lot of legwork, and the town’s Natural Resources office was instrumental in getting this to happen,” he said.
