Last week, the Trump administration moved to weaken one of the most popular and successful laws passed in the United States in the last 50 years: the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

If successful, the proposed changes could harm some iconic species on the East End, including the piping plover, the eastern tiger salamander, and even the monarch butterfly, and offshore species like the North Atlantic right whale.

The public has until Dec. 22 to comment on the amendments.

On the list of things to be thankful for: volunteer firefighters who answer the call no matter the time of day, no matter the weather.

ā€œNo one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in,ā€ said one East Hampton fireman, Simon Clarke. ā€œAnd it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.ā€

ā€œYou just don’t know what you’re going to get. Every building’s different, every fire’s different. My wife always says, ā€˜What happens if no one goes?’ Well, the house will burn,ā€ he said. ā€œI’ve never been to a fire where there aren’t enough people, but it just depends on who’s around.ā€

These glasses are really great. I have prescription readers that cost me hundreds of dollars. I prefer wearing these glasses over prescription glasses. The frames are very comfortable and stay on your face. I highly recommend these to any reader looking for high-quality glasses." - Rodney Badders

When East Hampton’s Cole Brauer finishes the round-the-world Global Solo Challenge sailing race, she will ā€œmake the history books by becoming the first American female ever to complete a solo, nonstop circumnavigation by the three great capes, joining an elite of fewer than 200 humans who have achieved this — ever,ā€ Marco Nannini, organizer of the race, said in a report late last month.

Kevin Gilbride had just turned south on Wainscott Northwest Road from Route 114 one day last month when a dead 75-foot pitch pine, one of thousands killed by the southern pine beetle infestation, fell on the roof of his truck. ā€œThere were branches everywhere. The dogs were freaking out. I thought it was a plane or something.ā€

ā€œThere’s nothing but love. Pure love, the whole 22 years I’ve been here,ā€ said Tony Lambert, who had his last day as a clerk at the Bridgehampton Post Office last week.

On Tony Lambert’s last day as a clerk at the Bridgehampton Post Office, where he had worked for the past 22 years, the lobby swelled with gratitude and well-wishes for him, as he had accepted a position at a post office closer to his new home.
