Petoskey stones, Detroit soul, the sand dunes along Lake Michigan and the Red Cedar River — all of these Michigan trademarks are featured prominently in class of '82 alum Frank Migliorelli's ode to his time at Michigan State University.

Frank Migliorelli & The Dirt Nappers released “Michigan” on May 30 as the lead single for their fifth studio album, “Abnormal Conditions.” The track blends country, folk and blues into a rock ballad.

From Rick's to recording studios, MSU alum tributes his time at school with new single "Michigan."

Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees have begun the process of searching for an interim president, as well as a more permanent presidential candidate, following the announcement of university president Kevin Guskeiwicz's departure last week.

The search process begins nearly a week after Guskiewicz was elected by Clemson University's Board of Trustees to become their next president.

In a campus wide email sent Tuesday afternoon, the board said they will consult an "advisory group of representatives from key university constituencies to provide input about the immediate next steps of identifying interim and long-term leadership for the university" in the "coming weeks."

The search process begins nearly a week after Guskiewicz was elected by Clemson University's Board of Trustees to become their next president.

From May 29-31, Lansing Roller Derby (LRD) is hosting the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) North America Playoffs at the Lansing Center, where players highly encourage newcomers to come out to the track to be introduced to the sport.

Abby Maksimchuk, the tournament's organizer, said that the growth of LRD and derby across the world has been amazing to witness and that having the honor of hosting a national community for this event has been a dream come true for the grassroots organization.

Michigan State University Board of Trustees Chair Brianna Scott said the departure of President Kevin Guskiewicz is the fault of three trustees who used their positions as "weapons."

As of Friday morning, the board had yet to finalize plans for a presidential search committee or to appoint an interim president, Scott said.

In a virtual interview with The State News on Friday morning, Scott addressed an array of topics surrounding Guskiewicz’s leaving, next steps for the university and divisions with MSU’s Board of Trustees.

If you asked most students at Michigan State University whether they enjoy following Spartan athletics, even those who are not especially passionate about sports, they would likely say "yes." From packed student sections at Spartan Stadium, where it is always a beautiful day for football, to the energy of the Izzone and dedication of the Munnsters waiting hours before puck drop regardless of the opponent or weather, school spirit is a major part of Spartan identity.

However, that spirit is not always equally shared across all Spartan athletic programs, especially when it comes to women's sports.

Despite multiple women's athletic programs consistently competing at a high level and ranking amongst the top programs in the Big Ten and the nation, student attendance at their events often remains low compared to many men's sports - even in cases where those programs are not experiencing the same ...

Michigan State University alumni are back on campus this week for the 2026 Spartan Reunion. Per MSU tradition, Spartans who come back for their 50th reunion are especially recognized.

In 1929, former MSU President Frank S. Kedzie hosted gatherings for alumni who had graduated 50 or more years earlier, which has since evolved into the tradition of recognizing Spartans at an annual reunion. This year, Spartans who graduated in 1976 are being honored.

The Spartan Reunion, where alumni are invited to revisit familiar campus gems, explore things they never got the chance to and continue to make MSU a part of their history, takes place from May 27-29

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the selection process for university governing boards should change after criticism emerged over the Michigan State University Board of Trustees' role in President Kevin Guskiewicz's departure, after previously declining to take action against certain members of the board.

"The way we've selected board members needs to change. The bipartisan proposal to appoint board members would help ensure institutions have the leadership expertise to get things back on track," Whitmer said in a statement to The State News.
