A suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire with deputies following an hourslong standoff in East Los Angeles early Wednesday morning.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the area of Noakes Street and South Downey Road shortly before 2 a.m. after someone inside a home reportedly called authorities and threatened to hurt themselves.

The individual later barricaded themselves inside the residence, prompting a large law enforcement response that included deputies on the ground and aerial support from a department helicopter.

At one point, multiple gunshots were heard on video, though it was not immediately clear whether the gunfire came from the suspect, law enforcement, or both.

Shortly after the shots rang out, an armored law enforcement vehicle was seen backing away from the home as emergency medical crews arrived with a gurney.

spokesperson for the sheriff’s department later confirmed that the suspect initially fired at deputies, who responded by firing back and striking the suspect. The unidentified individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further details about the suspect or what led to the standoff have been released.

A newly published investigation by The New York Times has brought forward serious s*xual abuse allegations against labor leader Cesar Chavez, prompting a nationwide reassessment of his legacy.

According to the report, Chavez—who co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW)—is accused of s*xually abusing women and underage girls during his time leading the union. The investigation is based on interviews with dozens of former associates, family members, and alleged victims, along with internal documents and records.

Among the most significant claims, civil rights leader Dolores Huerta alleged that Chavez sexually assaulted her in the 1960s, describing encounters she says were non-consensual and resulted in pregnancies that were kept secret for decades. ďżź

The investigation also includes accounts from women who say they were minors at the time of the alleged abuse, with some claiming the misconduct began when they were as young as 12 or 13 years old. ďżź

In response, organizations tied to Chavez—including the UFW and the Cesar Chavez Foundation—said they are “deeply troubled” by the allegations and have pledged to support potential victims while seeking more information.

The fallout has been swift. Multiple events tied to Cesar Chavez Day have been canceled or modified, and some cities and institutions are considering renaming streets, schools, and public landmarks bearing his name. ďżź

Chavez, who died in 1993, has long been regarded as a central figure in the American labor movement, known for organizing farmworkers and advocating for better working conditions. However, these new allegations have introduced a deeply controversial dimension to his legacy.

Mexican federal authorities have released new details on the intelligence operation that led to the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Officials say his capture was the result of prolonged military surveillance — not chance. According to Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), intelligence units tracked vulnerabilities within his inner circle, including movements linked to his romantic partner, Guadalupe Moreno Carrillo.

Authorities confirmed Oseguera Cervantes was located at a rural property in Tapalpa, Jalisco, after his partner was transported there under heavy security on February 20. Surveillance continued, and federal forces confirmed he remained at the location the following day.

On February 21, an assault plan was finalized. The operation ended in an armed confrontation that resulted in the cartel leader’s death, officials said.

Investigators also revealed Oseguera Cervantes had been suffering from chronic kidney failure and relied on a clandestine medical clinic in the rural community of El AlcĂhuatl. The unusual flow of medical supplies into the region ultimately helped authorities narrow the search area between Talpa de Allende and Tapalpa.

What was meant to keep him hidden ultimately exposed his location.

Unverified reports circulating on social media and messaging platforms on Saturday are claiming that Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” may have been killed.

As of this writing, no official confirmation has been released by Mexican federal authorities, the Mexican military, or U.S. law enforcement agencies regarding the reported death of the alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Government officials have not acknowledged the claims, and no supporting evidence has been provided through credible sources.

Rumors regarding the death or capture of Oseguera Cervantes have surfaced multiple times over the years and have repeatedly proven false, prompting authorities and analysts to urge caution when evaluating unverified claims shared online.

At this time, details surrounding the alleged incident — including location, date, or cause of death — remain unclear. Law enforcement agencies have not issued statements confirming any recent operation involving Oseguera Cervantes.

This remains a developing story, and authorities are expected to provide updates if credible information becomes available.
