We didn’t think he would make it through the night: He kept asking for “Murphy…” — but no one knew who that was 🐾💔 We didn’t think he would make it through the night. His oxygen level was very low, his coughing fits were worsening. The nurses asked us to stay calm, but he kept mumbling the same name. “Murphy… Murphy…” At first, we imagined a son or an old war friend. Then, when I leaned in and gently asked him who Murphy was, his barely parted lips whispered: “My good boy… I miss my good boy.” And then, everything became clear. I called his daughter, still on the road from another state. I asked if Murphy was a dog. Her voice broke. “A Golden Retriever… thirteen years old. We had to leave him at my brother’s while Dad was in the hospital.” After several calls and some raised eyebrows, the head nurse managed to arrange it. I went into labor in the middle of the night, and my husband, Evan, rushed me to the hospital.
