The justices offered no comment on their rejection of an appeal by former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis of a restitution order, in which she also asked the court to overturn the 2015 court case that legalized same-sex marriage.

The court turned away an appeal filed by Kim Davis, a former county clerk in Kentucky who was sued after refusing to issue a marriage license to a gay couple.

"The vote late on Sunday was 60 to 40, with seven Democrats and one independent joining with most Republicans to advance the measure." The House must still approve the bill, which would fund all of government for 30 days, guarantee nutrition assistance for the year, reinstate many federal workers laid off during the shutdown, and bar layoffs in future shutdowns this fiscal year.

The Senate voted late Sunday evening on a compromise that could reopen the government following the longest shutdown in history.

“Legal experts … are deeply skeptical that her petition will go anywhere, but anxious same-sex couples and advocacy groups fear the conservative-majority court will once again open the door for debating LGBT+ rights under the guise of religious freedom.” — The Independent, on the U.S.Supreme Court’s scheduled consideration of former county clerk Kim Davis’ bid to avoid paying $300,000 to a couple whose same-sex marriage license she rejected 10 years ago in Kentucky. Davis is also challenging the 2015 case that originally granted marriage rights to same-sex couples.
