Great turnout from the Harrison community at the EPA CGA Meeting virtual meeting last night. The questions in the Chat were excellent and pointed out the obvious: the current EPA plan to clean up the Passaic River is outdated and a danger to public health.
EPA has to go back to the drawing board and not put a Toxic Dioxin Open Air Sludge Plant and dioxin-laden debris from the River at PSE&G in Harrison.
It also should not be placing a Toxic Sludge plant next to the PVSC, which is just over 1 mile from a residential community in the Ironbound Section of Newark. The CAG Members, in their heart, know that this plan is terrible and should not go forward. CAG members have been working for decades on getting EPA to clean up the Passaic River so we understand the push to put through a poor plan. Something is better than nothing but the current plan risks exposures to the residents that would be mitigated if the location of these two plants were in an industrial area like South Kearny or further down the Passaic River in the Bay area.
The Plan to use the Lister Avenue Superfund site as a Staging Area demonstrates how EPA has lost its way. At the meeting, in answering a question, an EPA personnel member stated that the cap portion of the Lister Avenue Superfund site would not be used. Another EPA personnel member corrected the first EPA personnel member and stated that it would be used, but EPA would make sure of weight restrictions and monitor for cracks in the cap. The Lister Avenue facility contains, per EPA's own admission, the most toxic dioxin and other cancer-causing chemicals that EPA can only Cap and wait for new technology in hopes of being able to process the chemicals so they are not cancer-causing and remove them decades or centuries from now.
This fight is not over. It is also devastating that Mayor James Fife and Councilman James Doran told the community the Sludge Plant was not coming, knowing full well it was coming. They defamed those who were telling the truth and making the community aware. Three years have been lost in the community opposing EPA's plan. Fife and Doran lied because they know EPA's plan is terrible, but they, for whatever reason, are supporting it and have been for years.
