Talk of the Towns
Open Water Swimming with Co-Hosts Ron Beard and Liz Graves

Here in Maine, it’s the season for swimming. We have great freshwater lakes and rivers, and along the coast, a whole ocean of opportunity.

Open Water Swimming is a popular life sport around these parts. For many, it’s a moving meditation, a reminder that we experience reality in layers and we can shift our perspective by dipping below the surface.

Ron Beard and Liz Graves, co-hosts of Talk of the Towns, recently spoke with three open water swimmers from Hancock County: Puranjot Kaur, Rob Benson, and Gail Gladstone. Their conversation will be featured on Wednesday afternoon, August 13, 4:00 – 5:00, on WERU Community Radio.

Join them when the Talk of the Towns is Open Water Swimming Only on WERU Community Radio, 89.9 FM on the radio dial, on the WERU App, or streaming all over our big blue and green planet at weru.org.

Talk of the Towns airs every month on the 2nd Wednesday, 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Listen to previous shows in the WERU Archives at https://archives.weru.org/category/talk-of-the-towns/.

On Sunday, July 27 from 6 to 8 pm, A World of Music host Greg Rossel welcomed Anna Dovhanych, a foreign exchange student from Ukraine attending high school in Blue Hill. Anna shared a range of music from her country, from traditional wedding songs to contemporary rock and pop, including several of her favorite artists. She even received a text from her parents back home, where it was 2 am! You can listen to the entire program at weru.org and on our app with our playback function, until August 10!

In Anna’s own words: "My name is Anna and I came here to Blue Hill from Ukraine. Because of the terrible situation – the war at my home, it was very dangerous to stay there. There were almost no lessons at school, because there was a lot of air raids, which forced us to go to the bomb shelter and pray that the rocket would not hit our city. Here I study at GSA and I’m going to my senior year and I’m really excited about it. Here at school I can get a good education and in the future I plan to go to college to study architecture to help rebuild Ukraine in the future."

And from Greg (who has been hosting A World of Music for 36 years): "Music can be a measure of resiliency of a nation’s culture and Ukraine has it in abundance. WERU was honored to have Anna here both as a new community member and an ambassador – bringing her knowledge of the music and also personal stories of her nation under siege yet still strong in the face of adversity."

Greg is back tonight with another amazing episode of A World of Music during our Summer Membership Drive, with a generous donor matching every donation made!

Congress and the Trump Administration recently clawed back $1.1 billion in federal funding for public and community media. For WERU this means the elimination of about a quarter of our annual revenue, or $165,000 per year. Raising these funds locally will be a big lift, but our strong and generous community can do it, beginning with our upcoming Summer Membership Drive, running August 2-9!

It’s time for a bold statement of community radio solidarity, and giving to WERU says it loud and clear. Giving is also a way to assert WERU’s financial independence from political uncertainties and agendas. Whether you donate for the first time or the one-hundredth time, and however much you can give, it’s important for the community to do this together. We Are You!

Call the station at 207-469-6600 or give online at weru.org. Make a statement of solidarity and keep WERU going strong as the voice of many voices! Thank you!
