Catholic Sentinel

Catholic Sentinel The Catholic Sentinel, the oldest Catholic newspaper on the West Coast, is the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Portland.

We work to evangelize, inspire and catechize in a culture that stands in need of the Gospel. Through story and encounter, we seek to help people love God and love others. The Catholic Sentinel is published twice monthly by Oregon Catholic Press and is the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Portland. For our social media and comment policy, we are indebted to the Missionaries of the Holy Spir

it, a beloved religious community of men based in Roy. Go after ideas and actions, not people. For example, it’s OK to write, “I disagree with what Bishop X said,” but not, “Bishop X doesn’t care about children at the border.” It’s acceptable to declare, “I disagree with what Senator Y did,” but not all right to ask, “How dare Senator Y call himself a Catholic?”
Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. You may be the best Catholic in the world and the most moral person who ever lived, but that doesn’t give you the right to treat other people with contempt. We will remove off-topic comments and assertions that are sarcastic, mean or false. Commenters can exchange views, but fiery personal debate does not belong on our pages. Those who persist in bad behaviors on our website or social media pages will have banned themselves by their actions.

WHERE DO I FIND LOCAL CATHOLIC NEWS NOW?
With the Oct. 1 closure of the Catholic Sentinel as well as its website, western Oregon Catholics will need to look elsewhere for local church news.
Stay up to date on news of how the local church is serving our most vulnerable neighbors in their time of need. Sign up at catholiccharitiesoregon.org/newsletter to receive emails from Catholic Charities of Oregon. Inspired by the transformative power of God’s love, Catholic Charities, the social services arm of the Catholic Church in Oregon, partners with the most vulnerable, regardless of faith, to achieve lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. Efforts include affordable housing communities, family support services, case management, counseling, food pantries, street outreach, and immigration and refugee assistance programs.
The Archdiocese of Portland issues a regular email newsletter called Parish Link. It focuses largely on archdiocesan announcements from the Archdiocese of Portland Pastoral Center. To subscribe, send a note to [email protected]. Also, keep an eye out at the website archdpdx.org as the archdiocese works on a web page for news.
Mater Dei Radio keeps an eye and an ear on local Catholic happenings, particularly the Morning Blend show with David Endres and Brenda Aikin, which airs 7 – 9 a.m. on 88.3 FM in Portland, Vancouver and Salem; 94.9 and 100.5 in Eugene, Springfield and Cottage Grove. Shows and news also are available at materdeiradio.com and on the free Hail Mary Media app.
We are so grateful that you read our newspapers. We always had you in mind.
Godspeed,
Ed Langlois
Managing editor of the Catholic Sentinel

Our rich intellectual tradition, our catechism and beautiful doctrine can give us the comical and self-limiting illusion that we completely understand God’s ways. I am sure the Father, Son and Spirit have a good laugh at that. go.sentinel.org/3CD4ypP

At Mass last week, I spied a young girl roll up a copy of the Catholic Sentinel and thwack her tiresome little brother on the head. As we conclude our 152-year

Over these nine plus years, I’ve added to my life’s resume – not in the usual sense, but in a different, more profound way: I’ve renewed my faith in God, and despite the barrage of harrowing events in the headlines, I’ve renewed my faith in humanity. go.sentinel.org/3yzdrhJ

I retained the little liturgical readings assignment through four archbishops, my wedding day, the births of my children, the dawn of the internet, the 9/11 attacks, the deaths of both parents, a pandemic and the birth of a grandson. go.sentinel.org/3RCjoRj

On Sept. 20, I wept because of Scripture. It wasn’t the actual content of God’s word, but only the chapter and verse numbers. Since my first day at

With the situation being "so serious, devastating and threatening," the did not offer his customary commentary on the day's Gospel reading before reciting the Angelus prayer Oct. 2. Instead, he focused on the war and the "terrible and inconceivable wound" it is inflicting on humanity. go.sentinel.org/3M0a88H
