We often point to the traumatic calls as the root of mental health struggles in the fire service, but the reality is, it's the cumulative weight of the calls and everything in between that truly wears us down. Chronic sleep deprivation, the inability to recover during shift work, and the grind of working 70, 80, or more hours a week just to support our families...it all adds up. Many firefighters are holding down two or three jobs, not because they want to, but because they have to. We miss birthdays, anniversaries, and first steps, often choosing not to call in sick because doing so would mean losing the built-in overtime our families depend on.

But through it all, we love this job. We chose this profession because we care, because we want to serve, and because we believe in the brotherhood and sisterhood of the fire service. We want to be able to do this for a career and retire with dignity, not spend our last years broken down or worry that we’ll be buried just a few years—or even months—after hanging up our gear. The job shouldn’t cost us our health, our families, or our futures. It’s time we recognize that and take care of our own.
