Standoff in Wheeler County after two armed suspects shoot at Laurens deputies

Two suspects shot at Laurens County deputies after crashing their car during a police chase.

Wheeler County's sheriff says officers are in a standoff with two armed suspects who shot at Laurens County deputies and then took off.

Sheriff Glenn Giles says that there is an armed standoff with the suspects in the neighborhood behind Cravey & Sons near Magnolia Street

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office says it started as a police chase as their deputies attempted to stop a stolen vehicle. They say suspects fired shots at Laurens County deputies. The suspects refused to stop, but eventually, the Laurens Sheriff says the suspects crashed near McRae in Telfair County, near U.S. 441 and Highway 280.

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office encourages people in McRae to "remain vigilant." They advised people to:

Lock all doors and windows
Do not leave keys in vehicles
Stay indoors and remain vigilant
Report any suspicious activity.
