While sometimes overlooked as window dressing, setting plays a crucial role in grounding stories and propelling them forward. In this panel discussion, professional editors, publishers, and authors will discuss how to employ a historical setting (a specific time and place) as a vehicle for their narratives. They will share their research tools and discuss how the history of places influenced their particular stories.

Additionally, they will discuss some of the common difficulties authors encounter including managing the balance between historical detail – the dreaded “info dump” – and maintaining the forward momentum of the story; the danger in imposing our modern perspective on a historical situation – in other words, being true to the cultural mores of a historical time period without imposing our 21st-century judgment on it; and an understanding of the difference between the perceived history of a place (the mythology of place) versus the human experience of place (how the characters or memoirists suss out the emotional truth of that place).
