Several have asked why we decided to build on St. George Island, FL. Here's the cliff notes of our story:

We grew up in small-town Midwest America—Laura in Benson, Illinois (population 400), and Tom on a farm just outside of Toluca, Illinois.

We both stayed in the Midwest for college. Laura graduated from Illinois State University (ISU) in Normal, Illinois, and began working at the ISU Student Health Service shortly after graduation. We made Normal our home, as we raised our three children, and Laura retired from ISU a few years ago.

Tom worked at Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing until the plant closed, then continued his career at our parish, St. Patrick Catholic Church of Merna—all while running his landscaping business, Northside Landscaping, LLC, which he has operated since 1989 and continues today.

Our connection to St. George Island began back in 1999, when we visited for the first time. Tom’s Uncle Lee purchased his first lot on the island in 1978 and went on to build more than 50 homes on SGI.

We’ve always loved the charm of small towns, and SGI has that same welcoming feel—we often describe it as Benson or Toluca with a beach view!
