They took ownership, convenience, and basically everything that used to be a one-time purchase,then somehow made us pay for it every month.

Gordon Parks picked up a camera because a gun wasn't going to change anything. That stuck with me before I ever picked one up myself.

He called the camera his weapon of choice against poverty and racism. Not because it was gentler because it was more precise. It could tell the truth in a way a fight couldn't.

I think about that every time I'm behind the lens or in front of the mic. The military gave me weapons and precision. Parks showed me what precision looks like when the mission is telling the truth instead of ending one.

That's the legacy I'm actually chasing; not a body of work, but a standard for what the work is for.

The Edit Is the Work

The first draft is not the work. The first draft is the raw material.

Anyone can generate. The discipline is in the return; going back into what you made and asking it to be more honest, more precise, more true.

The edit is where craft actually lives.

The ones who can't edit can't grow. They're too attached to the version they made to build the version they need.

Be willing to cut what cost you something.

That's how you get to great.

Stop measuring your chapter 7 against someone else's chapter 20.

The timeline you're on is the only one that matters and it's moving exactly as fast as it's supposed to.

You are not behind. You are becoming.

The pressure you feel isn't failure. It's the friction that precedes form.

Stay in it.

What's being built in you right now has never been built before.
