Tonight’s Qhia Dab Neeg Film Festival event by In Progress "On Screen, On Air: Hmong in Television," was such a beautiful reminder of how far we’ve come!
“This year’s festival celebrates 50 years of Hmong storytelling; five decades of filmmaking and community media that have carried our stories from refugee camps to homes here in Minnesota, and to screens around the world.”
Tonight’s conversation, moderated by Hlee Lee featured true trailblazers whose work has shaped how Hmong stories are seen and heard:
🎥 Senator Foung Hawj – Producer of Kev Koom Siab, the first Hmong television program in Minnesota
🎥 Mitch Lee & Yau Muas – 3HMONGTV | 3HBC
🎥 Zoua Vang – The first Hmong news anchor on mainstream TV
Listening to them share their journeys reminded me how deeply important it is that we tell our own stories, from OUR own lived experiences! Media is so freaking powerful, and we MUST continue to occupy space within it.
I’m humbled and deeply grateful to be in the same room as them and many others who have paved the way for us all. We owe so much to them who took risks and opened doors so we could have the freedom to create, express, and belong in this space.
Thank you to my loves Red Red and Yengyee Lor for going with me. What a night to remember!!! 🙏🏽❤️
