Today is the last day of Severe Weather Awareness Week. Our last topic revolves around watches and warnings.

As many of you know, we have severe thunderstorm or tornado watches ahead of storms. If we are in a watch, it means that we have the right conditions for severe weather or tornadoes. However, it does not mean that we will have severe weather or tornadoes. Many times, we have the right ingredients for storms, but they either don't produce or get to severe levels.

Once we are in a warning, that means we have either a severe thunderstorm or tornado. This can be radar indicated or observed. If we are in a warning, this is when it is time to take action, especially in a tornado warning.

With our fourth day of Severe Weather Awareness Week, we are going to cover a range of topics relating to tornadoes. Thus, there will be multiple posts on taking shelter, how tornadoes form, and statistics on tornadoes

This post will be on some statistics relating to tornadoes.

Severe Weather Season in Wisconsin is mainly May through September. However, this doesn't mean we can't have severe storms on any given month.

Since last year's February tornado, the state of Wisconsin has had a tornado in every month of the year. While we can have a tornado at any time, our peak tornado season is in June and July.

With tornadoes, more than half are between an EF0 (65 mph - 85 mph) and an EF1 ( 86 mph - 110 mph). Less than 1% reach EF4 (166 mph - 200 mph) and EF5 (200+ mph) levels.

This year, more than 1,00 tornadoes have already been confirmed, already reaching close to our yearly average.

With our fourth day of Severe Weather Awareness Week, we are going to cover a range of topics relating to tornadoes. Thus, there will be multiple posts on taking shelter, how tornadoes form, and statistics on tornadoes.

This post will cover how tornadoes form.

To begin, we start with strong surface and even stronger upper level winds. This creates a rotating column of air.

While we have a rotating column of air, warm and moist air is being pulled up into the storm, knows as updrafts. Updrafts allow storms to continue to grow. While we have these updrafts, cold, dry, and dense air within the storms are sinking rapidly. If conditions are right, the rotating column of air, with the clashing of rising and sinking air, will stretch the column of air vertically.

If this continues, a wall cloud may form, and the rotating column of air will build from the cloud to the ground. If it reaches the ground, this is what we know as a tornado.

This post will be covering how to take shelter.

As many of you know, the first and foremost thing to do in an event of a tornado warning, is to be in a sturdy building. Mobile homes and cars are NOT SAFE.

Secondly, go to the lowest floor of the building you are in. If you can, try to be in the center and smallest room in the building. This will put you in a position of having many walls in between you and outside.

Lastly, take cover under something sturdy. Make sure, at least your head is covered. If there isn't anything sturdy or secure, this is when your safety kit/supplies that we went over yesterday come in handy. Having a blanket, shoes, or helmet is your next best bet.

Welcome to day three of Severe Weather Awareness Week!

Today, we will be going over Thursday's tornado drills, and what supplies to have on hand ahead of a tornado warning.

On Thursday, both Minnesota and Wisconsin will be conducting tornado drills at 1:45 pm and 6:45 pm. Depending on your city or county, sirens may go off. This is so that you can practice what you would do, and where you would go, in an event of a tornado warning. It also is a good time to know what supplies you have as well.

During a tornado warning, it is good to have a supply kit that can help you and your family not only pass time or keep things charged, but also items to keep you unharmed, in event of a dangerous situation. Anything can happen with storms, and you may be stuck for minutes, hours, or even days.

Having a first aid kit, food and water, and flashlights are important. Have something that can protect you from any debris. You may also be in a situation where you are trapped. Having a whistle or air horn is good to have, as your voice might not enough for someone to hear you.

Wednesday evening continues to stay dry, with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Overnight, we once again have chances for light scattered rain. These chances for rain will continue through Thursday evening. Like today's chances, much of the day will be dry despite possible showers.

For the rest of the week, highs will try to climb to the 70s with breezy winds. Our next chance for rain arrives Sunday.
