β€œIt was in the middle of a laugh that the truth came out.”

πŸ“š A Glimpse Into Its Legacy:
Once a bestseller, Dark Laughter captured a moment of cultural change β€” when American ideas about love, freedom, and identity were being reimagined. It became Anderson’s most commercially successful novel and reflected the spirit of a generation caught between tradition and transformation. A century later, it still offers a window into a restless, searching era.
A book that dared to laugh in the dark β€” and left its mark, even in shadow.

π‘†β„Žπ‘’ π‘“π‘œπ‘Ÿ π»π‘’π‘Ÿ by Rashmi Trivedi β€” Blue Rose Publishers β€” is a novel about a woman reclaiming her identity after years of self-sacrifice.

It’s a story that resonates with anyone who's ever felt lost in the roles they've been assigned.

β€œAdventure can be real happiness.”

πŸ“š A Glimpse Into Its Legacy:
Christie’s fifth novel, The Secret of Chimneys, mixed royal intrigue with murder mystery in a playful romp through country house politics and international espionage. It introduced Superintendent Battle, a recurring character, and was one of her more lighthearted early works. A hundred years later, Christie’s mysteries still captivate β€” clever, surprising, and always a step ahead.
Proof that even in 1925, no one did twists quite like Agatha.

π‘‡β„Žπ‘’ 𝑇𝑀𝑖𝑠𝑑𝑒𝑑 π‘‡π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘’ by Rachel Burge β€” Hot Key Books β€” is a quietly unnerving novel that blends Norse mythology with a modern story of grief, isolation, and intuition.

It’s atmospheric, elegant, and surprisingly resonantβ€”especially if you’ve ever felt like your skin knows something before your mind does.

πŸ“– The Painted Veil
by W. Somerset Maugham
Originally published in 1925
πŸ–‹ A Line Worth Remembering:

β€œThe only way to find love is to love many things.”

πŸ“š A Glimpse Into Its Legacy:
Set in 1920s Hong Kong and China, The Painted Veil follows a young woman’s journey through betrayal, self-discovery, and forgiveness. Though initially received with mixed reviews, the novel has grown in reputation over the years, adapted into multiple films and admired for its quiet emotional depth. A century later, Maugham’s portrait of transformation still resonates.
A story about what remains after illusion fades β€” and what might begin in its place.

π‘‡β„Žπ‘’ π‘Šβ„Žπ‘–π‘‘π‘’ π‘…π‘œπ‘ π‘’ by Dave Baines β€” Independently published, available now β€” is a quiet dystopian adventure that sneaks up on you.

If you like political tension, moral gray zones, and characters who fight back without fanfareβ€”this one’s worth your time.

MANHATTAN TRANSFER – by John Dos Passos

Originally published in 1925

πŸ–‹ A Line Worth Remembering:
β€œAll right, we are two nations. And all the people on the bottom hate all the people on the top.”

πŸ“š A Glimpse Into Its Legacy:
With shifting perspectives and rapid-fire scenes, Manhattan Transfer painted a vivid, kaleidoscopic portrait of New York City in the early 20th century. Dos Passos captured the energy, inequality, and anonymity of modern urban life with a style that was experimental for its time β€” and deeply influential in the years to come. A hundred years later, its social observations still hit home.
A novel that moves like the city itself β€” fast, fragmented, and unforgettable.

Live from The Common Shelf // Thursday Book Club Drop

π΄π‘™π‘β„Žπ‘’π‘šπ‘–π‘ π‘’π‘‘ by SenLinYu β€” Bloom Books, coming September 2025 β€” began as one of the most talked-about fanfictions online. It’s since been rewritten into something entirely new: no wands, no Hogwarts, just a story forged from the same brutal, relentless core.

What happens when survival costs everything? When memory becomes resistance? When the only way out is through?

This isn’t a comfort read. It’s a conversation starter. A late-night text to someone who gets it. Welcome to the darker end of the shelf.

I’ve included a few book club questions belowβ€”feel free to use them in your group or answer right here in the comments. I’ll be reading along with you.

100 Years of Books // THE TRIAL – by Franz Kafka

Originally published posthumously in 1925

πŸ–‹ A Line Worth Remembering:
β€œIt’s only because of their stupidity that they’re able to be so sure of themselves.”

πŸ“š A Glimpse Into Its Legacy:
The Trial was published a year after Kafka’s death, against his wishes, by close friend Max Brod. Its portrayal of a man arrested and prosecuted by an unreachable authority struck a nerve with readers and critics alike. A hundred years on, Kafka’s bleak humor and sense of existential dread still feel unsettlingly familiar.
A haunting reminder of how helpless one can feel inside a system with no face, no answers, and no end.

English gives us bookworm, which always felt a little… delicate.
But now I learn that in German I’d be a read-rat (charming), in French I’m an ink drinker (romantic), and in Danish? A reading horse. Which implies stamina. And possibly a strong back.

So, here’s the question:
Which one are you?
Comment belowβ€”or make up your own.
