Here is Lakes Edition's Town of the Week: The Jefferson County's town's moniker was given by two students of the bible, David J. Powers and his brother Samuel. When they arrived in the area in 1842 they liked the look of the area so much they name it after and oasis in the Syrian desert. The name means "sandy soil" which this region has in abundance. Can you name the town? 🙂

The Correct Answer to Lakes Edition's Town of The Week quiz is: 2) Footville.
Footville is home to famed cartoonist Lynda Barry, known for her comics Ernie Pook's Comeek. And there is Footville's Luther Valley Historical Society, quite remarkable. The Historical Society overseas and owns three historic structures in and around Footville. There is the Footville State Bank, listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), the Telephone company building, "Dial" building (sold to private interests) and historic Methodist Episcopal Church all within walking distance of each other, all in their original locations. It's like walking around a Hollywood movie set but being able to go inside each building and interact directly with the historic content of each. The correct answer to Lakes Edition's Town of the Week is 5) Aztalan. Located minutes East of Lake Mills, the town of Aztalan (pop. 1382) is a tourist destination for Aztalan State Park. The park established in 1952 is the historic site of a town founded around 900 AD. Aztalan State Park was added the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Notable in the park are the flat topped, pyramidal earthen mounds (appearing like edifices in an ancient Aztec, or Toltec town in Mexico) and wooden stockade. But if more time is available check out the Lake Mills Aztalan Historical Society nearby with the 1852 Baptist Church Museum, housing ancient Aztalan artifacts, Civil War items and items from pioneer life. There is also a 1861 Moravian Church and 1840's cabins and school on the premises. And keeping with the Aztalan theme stop into the Aztalan Inn Bar & Grill in Lake Mills for great pub food and fish fries.

Sun Prairie as many know was the birthplace of Georgia O'Keefe; hometown of Jimmy the Groundhog; has a great festival of corn: The Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival (a five day festival!); home to the Angell Park Speedway; Fresh Mart International Groceries: packaged, bottled, frozen food items as well unique produce from Eastern Europe, India, the Middle East and beyond; a great public library with a fantastic used bookstore inside; and a great farmer's market on Saturdays near the newer development, Cannery Square Park where you can grab a coffee and pastry item at Beans 'n Cream Coffeehouse.
