Today is ! Monitoring is one of the most important steps of restoration and can involve many different parameters. Monitoring practices help us determine how successful different restoration methods are in various ecosystems, recognize emerging or ongoing problems, and better prepare for future environmental changes.

One of our current monitoring projects is right here on our campus! In 2014, Marine Discovery Center worked in collaboration with environmental partners to enhance 5 ½ acres of former NSB High School athletic fields into a salt marsh habitat. This project restored the elevation to allow for tidal flow, planted native coastal plants, and constructed living shoreline demonstration areas. Upon completion, the marsh quickly became home to a diverse community of organisms.

Now 10 years post-restoration, MDC is looking for dedicated volunteers to be involved in our new marsh monitoring program. Methods will include water quality testing (looking at factors such as salinity, temperature, pH, and turbidity), a visual species survey, seine netting, and organism identification. The goal of this program is to assess species abundance and diversity within the restored marsh. This is just one of many parameters that can analyze the success of our past project as well as the restoration methods used.

Come be a part of our new program, and work to develop your scientific skillset! This project is open to all registered MDC volunteers. Not a volunteer yet? Learn how to join our team at https://marinediscoverycenter.org/volunteer/
