As explained by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the educational experience of U.S. Hispanics is one of accumulated disadvantage. Many Hispanic students begin formalized schooling without the economic and social resources that many other students receive, and schools are often ill-equipped to compensate for these initial disparities.

The steady stream of Latino students arriving on college campuses in recent years has been a bright spot in higher education, but some worry the pandemic could threaten those gains. The most recent enrollment data showed a 5.4 percent drop in the head count of Latino undergraduates in the fall, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.

According to a new report from Human Rights Watch, COVID-19-related school closures affected children unequally, as not all children had the opportunities, tools, or access needed to keep on learning during the pandemic. For millions of students, school closures will not be temporary interference with their education, but the abrupt end of it. Education should be at the core of all governments’ recovery plans, to make education free and accessible to children everywhere.
