🦈 A bright orange shark has just been discovered — the first of its kind ever recorded!

The six-foot-long shark was caught during a sport fishing trip near Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica. Scientists were stunned by its vivid orange body and striking white eyes.

This rare nurse shark has a condition called xanthism, which reduces red pigments in the skin and leaves strong yellow or golden tones. Combined with signs of albinism, the shark’s unusual color makes it stand out more in the wild — which could also make it easier for predators to spot.

Xanthism is extremely rare across all animals. Until now, it has only been seen in a few fish, reptiles, and birds — never before in a shark from the Caribbean.

Experts think the shark’s unique look may be caused by a genetic mutation, although diet or environmental factors could also play a part. This discovery raises new questions about genetic diversity and survival among nurse sharks.

Researchers say more studies are needed, since such a rare trait could change what we know about how sharks adapt and thrive in their natural habitat.

Scientists say the strange phenomenon is being caused by a rare virus.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, these alarming appendages are caused by a rare but naturally occurring virus called cottontail rabbit papillomavirus.

This virus produces wart-like tumors called papillomas, which typically appear on the head and face. In some cases, these growths elongate into black, horn-like structures, earning the rabbits an eerie, otherworldly appearance.

While unsettling, the virus is species-specific, affecting only rabbits and posing no risk to humans or other animals. However, it can spread to domestic rabbits through contact with wild rabbits or biting insects, sometimes requiring veterinary care. In wild populations, the tumors are generally harmless unless they obstruct basic functions like eating or drinking.

Colorado is home to three species of cottontail rabbits—all vulnerable to the virus—and they often thrive in urban and suburban settings. Experts stress that the best course of action is to observe but not interfere, as trying to help infected wildlife may do more harm than good.
