Hey everyone: I’ve just moved literally across the continent to Alexandria, VA. If you ping me about knives at Edwards… I hope you’re OK with REALLY long trips to drop off and pick up. It’s been fun… thanks for the work!

Same knife, before and after! Customer found this great knife at a thrift store, but with a broken and bent tip. A bunch of elbow grease later, it’s fully functional again!

Some of the most precise work comes when working with a blade longer than your stones. In this case, I’m taking the cupping out of the edge of a custom handmade blade. I don’t want to take any steel from the middle of the blade, where the gap exists, but I also cannot tilt the heel and tip from the main line, and thus can’t just grind the entire edge along the stone w***y nilly. I must carefully work my pressures and, especially when working on the tip, hover the middle of the blade just barely off the stone, to make sure I’m only taking steel off the highest points. This was about 5 minutes into the process. Another 15 minutes of careful grinding after this video, but ready now to reset the bevels, then get it sharp!

Side Hustle Goal
-Short version: Besides providing tasty food for the ever-demanding cat, I’m saving up about $2k for a good microphone and interface, plus the other bits and bobs for a solid audio recording setup, so I can share my OTHER big hobby better.
-Long version: I used to have and run an audio recording studio, and have recorded/mixed/mastered a bunch of CDs for myself and others. (One customer sold 12,000 of an album I recorded for her to Hobby Lobby!) I had to give back the studio equipment (which my parents bought and owned) once I moved away from my “hometown” after grad school. I have gotten much more back into music over the last few years, even putting out onto YouTube the world’s first complete recording of the Bach Cello Suites on mandolin (one of my primary instruments.) But that was all recorded on what I happened to have at the time, namely a $40 USB podcast mic. Now, I have a new dream mandolin, and I’d like to record it with equipment that can keep up, so I’ve narrowed my search down to a Gefell M300 microphone feeding through an RME Babyface Pro FS interface. The savings account to buy those is slowly building, but I have a recording project, specifically for A Long-Expected Soundscape where I’m doing music and Foley recordings starting later this year, completing in 1Q 2023. A deadline looms ever closer!

So that’s my current “why,” other than amusing and feeding the cat, and enjoying the therapeutic (to me) process and sound and feel of putting great edges back on the tools we all use to work and live. So keep ‘em coming, please! Thanks for your business!
