Server intentionally crossing out policy on tipping on bill to make it seem like we need to tip
Ate at Il Piatto in Washington DC. Noticed the policy while walking in and thought that’s fine I normally tip that. The food was absolutely amazing as well as the drinks and was thinking about an additional tip but this turned me completely off and I thought it was scummy to intentionally cross out the part of the policy stating “tips are not expected” with a little smiley face.

Get to the end of the meal and the guy literally asks for a tip and hands me one of those card machines with a preselected 15%.

I'm not even American.

Is nothing sacred? How far has this cancer spread?

Edit: just for the people who somehow assume I paid it, I didn't. I'm British. We've been disappointing the French for a thousand years and we are very good at it, thank you very much.

Paid at a Food Truck with Cash to Avoid Getting “Tip Guilted” on a Card Payment. They Still Got Me with a 3.99% “Card Fee” Even Though I Paid with Cash!
It’s only $0.50, so I’m not really fussing over it. And it’s a small business that had good food and friendly service, so I’m not about to ruin their name by putting them on blast.

My best guess is that this was unintentional, and that the 3.99% fee is automatic in their payment system on the assumption that the majority of people pay with card.

But I'm sharing this as an FYI that if you choose to pay with cash as a method of avoiding tipping... be aware of this possibility! I wish I knew to say something at the time. But this happened on a trip a week ago so it's too late now.

I'll be paying attention going forward though!

15% wasn’t good enough, apparently
This waitress was friendly, decent enough service. Left our waters empty for a while, so overall fine, nothing excellent (though really enjoyed the food). But the absolute audacity to scratch out the 15% like it wouldn’t be good enough for her. I was not the one footing this bill, or else I would’ve given a big fat zero for this alone. The entitlement is infuriating, and just another reminder of how screwed up the whole system is. We have got to end this nonsense, I’m so sick of dining out.
