Malcolm-Jamal Warner, 'Cosby Show' actor, dies at 54 in Costa Rica drowning. Warner created many TV moments etched in the memories of Generation Xers.

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Malcolm-Jamal Warner the actor who played teenage son Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” has died at age 54 in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica, authorities there said.

Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department said Monday that Warner drowned Sunday afternoon on a beach on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. He was swimming at Playa Cocles in Limon province when a current pulled him deeper into the ocean.

“He was rescued by people on the beach,” the department's initial report said, but first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs, and he was taken to the morgue.

[7/18] UPDATE ON THIS STORY
It wasn't politics that killed The Late Show but lack of advertising revenue.

The network’s bosses could no longer stomach the fact that Colbert has been plagued with an increasingly dire shortage of advertisers. The losses for the show were pegged between $40 million and $50 million a year. That’s despite Colbert’s No, 1 ratings in his time slot and his status as a key face for the Network.

In the end, Paramount’s co-CEO George Cheeks decided to kill the show, sources said.

“Colbert gets no advertising and late night is a tough spot,” said a person with direct knowledge of CBS’s decision.

“Colbert might be No. 1, but who watches late night TV anymore?”

(7/17). CBS made the announcement in a statement that also called Colbert “irreplaceable.” This, the network said, is why the series itself will end in May 2026, rather than continuing on with a new host.

“We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television,” the statement continued. “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

[EDITORIAL] Are you tired of all negative news coverage?

If you watched the Sunday Morning "political/news" on network television, you may have noticed a great deal of time devoted to the tragic floods in the Hill Country. Most, if not, all was negative about "should have, could have done this or that." Stories of blame and fault. Nothing positive about Texans helping Texans. Washington and New York newsrooms don't get it.

To those of you who do not live in Texas, understand; We don’t need the federal government to carry our water. Texans are not helpless. Texans band together first because Texas is First. We help our fellow Texans no matter how far away they are. We'll send help, we'll come help, no questions asked. That's what makes Texans special, and we don’t apologize for that.

We asked Xai for its opinion on "using tragedy to score political points." This non-human program put it into context, clearly.

So to network news and politicians -

Using tragedy to score political points is a cheap tactic. It exploits real human suffering to push an agenda, often oversimplifying complex issues or twisting facts to fit a narrative. It’s manipulative and erodes trust in discourse, turning pain into a prop. People deserve better—grief shouldn’t be a political weapon. On the flip side, some argue it’s inevitable and politicians seize the moment. But even then, it’s a lazy shortcut that prioritizes optics over solutions. Respect the victims, address the root causes, and skip the grandstanding.
