Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital President and CEO Melissa Hall thanked El Dorado voters Wed., Aug. 4, after they approved a 1% local sales tax intended to support the hospital’s future.

Hall said the seven-year tax will help the hospital stabilize its finances, reduce its reliance on higher-cost contract workers and purchase critical equipment. It will also give hospital leaders time to pursue changes in federal reimbursement.

Butler County Emergency Management is building a new wildfire protection plan and they need your input to do it right. If you haven't participated in the public input survey that is being conducted as part of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan development, there is still time! There's a short survey open through the end of July (BONUS: you're entered for a $50 gift card just for filling it out).

There is a note at the end of the form that states that the survey will close and the gift card drawing will occur next week after the county fair wraps up. However, it’s being extended through the end of July to give more folks a chance to participate. Share your thoughts on Butler County's wildfire risks and priorities for wildfire reduction/prevention...and maybe win a gift card!

The survey can be accessed through the QR code on the flyer or by clicking on this link:

Do you remember your first livestock auction? The one when you could barely see over your animal's head? The rush of emotions as you enter the sale ring? Do you remember who was sitting in the stands?

Tonight is that "first" for many of our Butler County young people. They will be all nerves by evening, and not sure whether they are happy because they are receiving a premium check, or sad because they are selling the pet they've cared for all spring and summer long.

Come out tonight and grab your free supper, while visiting with old friends maybe you haven't seen in 20 years since you were that teary eyed kid on sale night. Listen as the awards are presented and local youth are celebrated. Raise your hand to bid on a leather work project or a drawing, because those kids need our support too.

See you at 5:30 pm for dinner. We can't wait to celebrate 4-H... what it's been to us and what it is to this current round of excited and anxious young people.

Please join us tomorrow on Monday, July 20, from 12-1PM, for Rural Kansas and the Future of Our Courts: What's at Stake. This educational webinar will help Kansans understand what’s really at stake for rural Kansans on the August 4 ballot amendment. Former Kansas Supreme Court Justice Lee Johnson will join to discuss his experience and perspective on the value of the current merit-based process for rural representation.

Born and raised in Caldwell, Kansas, Johnson was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 2001 and the Supreme Court in 2007. He served two years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, attaining the rank of sergeant (E-5). Johnson practiced law in Caldwell and, at various times, served as city attorney for Caldwell, Argonia, and Hunnewell, as well as counsel for the local school and hospital districts.

With the Aug. 4 special election less than three weeks away, Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital CEO Melissa Hall laid out her case for a one-cent city sales tax at a public forum Wednesday, July 15, at the El Dorado Performing Arts Center.

If El Dorado voters approve it, the tax would run for seven years and bring in an estimated $3 million a year to support hospital operations. Hall says that money would help stabilize the hospital’s finances now while it works toward longer-term fixes.
