Destiny Smith turned the game on its head when Butler needed it most, and the No. 14 Grizzlies followed her lead to a 64–54 Jayhawk Conference win over Cowley on Wednesday night at the Power Plant.

Smith caught fire late, scoring 12 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter while knocking down four three-pointers in the final period to seal Butler’s first home win of the new year. Her shooting surge capped a night in which all eight of her made field goals came from beyond the arc.

Wichita State saw an 18-point second-half lead slip away before falling in double overtime, 104-100, to Charlotte at Halton Arena.

Wichita State (9-6, 1-1) placed four players in double figures and scored 100 points for the second time this season, but Charlotte (7-8, 1-1) used a late rally and clutch overtime shooting to secure the win in a back-and-forth contest that featured nine lead changes and seven ties.

A proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern — a deal that would create the nation’s first coast-to-coast freight railroad — is drawing sharp scrutiny from competitors, shippers, labor unions and industry groups, including BNSF Railway, whose Southern Transcontinental line runs directly through Wellington.

The Transcontinental ran through Newton before it was moved south earlier this decade. The BNSF still hosts the BNSF Sand Creek Facility in Newton, a maintenance facility and offices located downtown.

According to the BNSF, the railroad employs 680 people in Newton and Wichita.

Western Kansas towns see the writing on the walls. Water is growing more scarce in the region, and for some of the people who live and work there, it’s a problem that needs to be addressed today.

Communities are already pouring resources into it, like water transfer projects, water recycling and aquifer recharge attempts.

But, as some towns have learned, water is a hard thing to share in the semi-arid area, and courts are struggling to balance precedents and statues.

Democrat has not represented Kansas in the U.S. Senate since before the original Wizard of Oz film played in theaters.

Ever since Democratic Sen. George McGill left his seat in January of 1939, Kansas Republicans have enjoyed an 86-year run in the upper chamber of Congress.

Ahead of the 2026 elections, five Democratic candidates have filed to challenge first-term Republican Sen. Roger Marshall.

Oddsmakers favor Republicans to retain their majority in the Senate. But Democrats hope enough popular dissatisfaction with the current presidential administration might damage Republicans’ electoral chances in Congress.

Primary elections are on Aug. 4, 2026. Voters will decide the next governor of Kansas — as well as a U.S. senator, state attorney general, state insurance commissioner, secretary of state and state treasurer — on Nov. 3, 2026.
